One morning, Copper the fox was walking along the river bank when he smelled a rabbit. Quietly, he crouched down in a patch of long grass as he attempted to sneak up on it. Then, in one swift motion he pounced on it, pinned the rabbit to the floor, and bit its neck.

Copper took the rabbit to his burrow and then went out again in search of more prey because in the summer when there was a lot of prey he had to search tirelessly for food that he could store for the winter, when prey was scarce. Once he had a big pile of prey stored for the winter Copper decided to call it a day and then fell asleep in his burrow.

The cold air hit Copper’s body like snow and when he opened his eyes he realized it was winter. At first he was worried that he didn’t gather enough food but soon he stopped worrying and he spent the whole day resting in his warm cozy burrow. The next day Copper was looking through his food pile and he realized that he didn’t have enough food to survive the cold harsh wrath of winter.

“What should I do?” Copper questioned, “I guess I’ll have to ration my food.” He decided. Copper started organizing the food into small piles, one pile each day and then he started to relax and took a nap through the afternoon. When he woke up Copper decided to try to find a way to get more food, because eventually there might not be enough food left so he left his den in search of food.

Copper looked outside and the only thing that he saw was snow. There was snow everywhere and there wasn’t any sign of food. Suddenly, in the corner of his eye he saw a small bird and pounced on it and then started eating it. Once he finished eating he went back to his burrow and shook off all the snow, “It was super cold out there.” he said and then decided to take a nap until the morning.
