Chapter One
Amberpaw snapped her eyes open. She had a nightmare of her brother, Foxpaw, dying in a pool of blood, laying in a tunnel. She shook the dream out if her mind, and realized it was just passed dawn. She stepped outside and breathed in the crisp cold air of leaf-fall. Clouds covered the pale milky sky above, and pale sunlight filtered down into the hollow of Cloudclan camp. Th Dawn patrol would have already left, and she glance around the camp, looking for where her mentor, Sunshadow was.
Other warriors where munching on the fresh-kill. Foxpaw and Birdpaw would have probably already left with Leafstorm and Mistleaf for their training. Then she heard Sunshadow's voice from across camp,"Amberpaw, were doing training with Scorch-
paw and Singepaw!"
“Coming!”
She got to her paws and followed the older warrior. Scorchpaw and Singepaw were already waiting, tails twitching. Amberpaw swallowed a sigh. Ever since their apprentice ceremony, they’d been full of themselves—always showing off, always acting like they were already warriors. As if half a moon of training made a difference!
Sunshadow turned sharply. “We're doing hunting training. I expect focus from all three of you. No complaints.”
Amberpaw fell in beside the others as they left camp, headed for the sandy clearing in the woods where they often trained. Sunshadow walked ahead with brisk, confident strides. They arrived at the clearing, the warm late greenleaf sun filtering
through the trees. A breeze stirred the leaves, but the air between the apprentices felt anything but calm.
“We’ll begin with the hunter’s crouch,” Sunshadow announced curtly. She dropped low, movements sharp and precise. “Watch me. Then copy. You all know this already. This should only be a review for you.”
Amberpaw crouched, mimicking the stance. Her weight shifted forward, her ears perked, her paws silent—she hoped.
Sunshadow’s voice cut through the air. “Amberpaw. Stop waving your tail around.”
Amberpaw stiffened and lowered her tail quickly.
“You’re not stalking clouds. Prey will see that fox-lengths away.”
A muffled snicker came from behind her. Scorchpaw, she thought. Or maybe Singepaw. Probably both.
She gritted her teeth but said nothing.
Sunshadow rose to her paws. “Scorchpaw. You lead the first stalk.”
He crouched and slunk forward with an exaggerated grace, flicking a smirk back at Amberpaw as he passed.
They moved through the undergrowth. Suddenly, Sunshadow raised her tail. Everyone froze.
A squirrel was rustling among the branches up ahead.
“Scorchpaw,” Sunshadow whispered. “You try.”
Scorchpaw's eyes lit up. He dropped into a crouch and slunk forward, pawsteps light and practiced. Amberpaw held her breath.
He leaped neatly to the lowest branch, and then to the one the squirrel was sitting on.
Then he leapt. A squeak, a flurry of fur and leaves—and he
stood proudly over the squirrel’s lifeless body.
“Well done,” Sunshadow said with a nod. "Amperpaw, your turn."
She slunk forward until she picked up the scent of a rabbit.
Make sure it doesn't scent you. Amberpaw remembered, making sure she was downwind of the rabbit. She stalked forward until she was within pouncing distance. Just as she was about to leap, she stepped on a loose pebble, and it clattered aside loudly.
The rabbit perked up, alert, and after stomping with it's hind legs, it shot away. Without waisting a moment, Amberpaw shot after it.
"Amberpaw, don't waist your time on the rabbit!"
Annoyed, Amberpaw padded back, her tail flicking in frustration.
"Looks like one moon makes us better than you," Scorchpaw taunted.
"Shut up, Scorchpaw. Stop acting like you're already a warrior. I'll be better than you'll ever be."
For a few seconds the two cats did nothing but scowl at each other, until Sunshadow broke the silence.
"Well if you two are done insulting each other, I'd like too get on with hunting."
Amberpaw looked up and saw Sunshadow looking down at them, her tail flicking impaitiently.
Amberpaw blushed and mumbled, "Sorry Sunshadow."
Scorchpaw did the same, stammering, "Sorry Sunshadow, I'll pay attention next time."
She nodded, and told Singepaw to go.
He dropped into a crouch and crept forwards until the he found a trace of a chaffinch. Honestly, Amberpaw was glad he had found a tricky one. If he didn't catch it, Amberpaw could prove that they weren't better than
her. But luck was not on her side.
He quickly tracked down the bird. There it was, pecking at some seeds. Singepaw crept forward and leaped. For a split second it looked like Singepaw was going to miss, but his claws snagged the tail feathers of the black tail feathers and he pulled it to the ground and killed it quickly.
"Good. Next time, try getting closer before pouncing."
Singepaw nodded.
"You two go back to camp. Amberpaw, stay here and try again."
Amberpaw groaned inwardly, but she didn't protest. She dropped into a crouch and after a few moments heard squeaking. She slunk towards it, careful to not alert the mouse. She pounced, and made a clean kill.
"Good job Amberpaw. You can head back to camp now."
She nodded in thanks and headed back to Cloud Clan camp.
Chapter Two
By the time Amberpaw reached camp, the sun was begining to set, and the full moon rose in the distance. Sunshadow had returned to camp, and now Hawkstar was announcing who would go to the gathering.
Amberpaw wondered if she'd be chosen. She'd never been to the gathering since she'd only become an apprentice a quarter moon ago.
"The cat's who are going to the gathering with me are Pinenose, Scorchpaw, Ember shade, Singepaw," Amberpaw's heart sank as Hawkstar went on. They got to go but not her! But then Windstar finished with, "Silverwind Foxpaw, Sunshadow, and Amberpaw.
She was going to a gathering! Her very first gathering!
She went to find Foxpaw, who was sitting on the other side of the camp.
"Can you believe it!" He exclaimed, practically bouncing up and down, "Our very first gathering at moonhigh!"
I know!" Amberpaw said, her fur bristling with excitement, "but we should try to get some sleep in before it."
"Yeah, Foxpaw agreed.
They padded to the den and tried to fall asleep. She thought it would be impossible, but eventually, she drifted to sleep.
She woke up to Foxpaw shaking her awake.
"C'me on! He said, "We're going!"
Amberpaw jumped to her paws and ran out side to the group where Sunshadow was waiting for her.
Mistleaf also came, and then they set off to the gathering.
The gathering place was an island with a tree they used for a bridge. They crossed over and stepped into the gathering. The gathering was
huge. Cats from every clan were all together. The cats from Cloud Clan mixed in with the others. She saw Sunshadow sit down with a cat from Storm Clan who looked exactly like her, save for the black paws. Pineose went to a black tom from Mistclan.
"Look, there's a group of apprentices over there," Amberpaw pointed out.
"Let's go!" Foxpaw said, bounding over.
One apprentice was white she-cat with shocking sky-blue eyes. The others were a copper colored tom, a black cat with sharp green eyes, a white tom with brown flecks, and another black cat with dark brown ears, and tail tip, and paws. They introduced themselves.
"I'm Flamepaw," the copper colored tom said, "This is Darkpaw, and this is Crowpaw."
"It's Ravenpaw you mouse brain," the black she-cat said, rolling
green her eyes, "Stop forgetting my name on purpose."
" Right, whatever," Flamepaw said, "Oh, and we're from Stormclan. And this is Skypaw and Quickpaw."
"I'm Foxpaw, and this is my sister Amberpaw."
"Nice to meet you two," Ravenpaw said, "Also, the other four leaders are Froststar, Riverclan's leader," she geustered to a white she-cat sitting beside Hawkstar, "Silverstar, our leader," she flicked her tail to a tan and brown tom, "Falconstar, Breezeclan's leader, and Ivystar," she guestured to the other two cats.
"We were just talking about how Darkpaw fell in the lake yesterday."
"I told you, a went by CHOICE."
"Mm-hmm," Ravenpaw replied, unconvinced, "Then why did Sunfire have to pull you out?"
Skypaw, Quickpaw, Foxpaw, and Amberpaw burst out laughing.
"Wait really?" Skypaw asked, still laughing.
"I--" Darkpaw began, but at that moment, Hawkstar announced the gathering's begining
Hawkstar announced their two new apprentices, and everyone cheered for Amberpaw and Springpaw.
"Prey is running well in the clan. Fox-scent was found in our clan, but our warriors tracked it down and found it crossed into Riverclan. Just a warning to be cautious."
He stepped back and let Froststar forward.
"Riverclan can take care of ourselves thank you," the white she-cat said coldly.
"It was--,"
"We tracked down the fox and chased it out already. It's now off clan territory. Other than that, we have two new apprentices, Skypaw and
Quickpaw!"
The clans cheered for them too.
"Along with that, Poppylight has 3 kits, Streamkit, Floatkit, and Rapidkit."
Froststar stepped back and Falconstar stepped forward.
"Breezeclan has been doing well too. Heathersong has three kittens, Nightkit, Emberkit, and Moonkit!" Falconstar announced.
Falconstar stepped back and let Ivystar forward.
"ShadowClan is doing well. Our deputy, Stonefur, has retired, and our new deputy is Lightleap! On top of that, Pouncestep is be expecting kits!"
"All is well in Stormclan too. We have two new aprentices, Darkpaw and Leafpaw!"
The clans cheered for the two apprentices, and Amberpaw could see the cat who must have been Leafpaw sitting with the medicine cats.
Also---." the StormClan leader was interrupted by a clap of thunder.
The gathered cat's perked up, alert. A storm cloud loomed in the distance, approaching quickly.
"The gathering has come to an end!" Froststar yowled, jumping off the tree.
The other leaders did the same, and as BreezeClan led their clan of the island on the tree bridge, rain was already coming down hard. ShadowClan, Stormclan, and Riverclan went next, and then CloudClan.
Amberpaw dug her claws into the slick and wet tree bark, trying not to look down at the rushing water beneath her, muddy from the harsh rain.Suddenly, a gust of wind knocked her of balance, and her paws scrambled ti find a grip but she could feel herself slipping off the side. She saw Sunshadow grab for her, but just a moment too late.
Amberpaw fell into the water. She fought to stay afloat, instinct kicking
in, and she managed to get a gulp of air before she went under. She tumbled over and over, trying to find the surface, but the muddy torrent made it almost impossible. She tried to avoid the branches and other debrie, but she was getting dizzy from the lack of air. Suddenly she spotted a flash of light above her, and she kicked out as hard as she could to reach the surface.
Finally, she managed to reach the surface. Somehow, instinct kicked in, and she kicked out to the riverbank. It felt strangly natural, and somehow, she managed to reach shore.
Chapter Four
Amberpaw climbed on to shore.
Instantly, Foxpaw rushed over to her.
"Amberpaw are you okay!" he exclaimed.
"Yeah, I think I'm fine."
''You should see Featherpool and Fireflower when we get back to camp though."
"Okay, I will."
~
Amberpaw woke up in the medicine cat den. Fireflower had told her to stay for the night. Amberpaw got to her paws and stretched. She found Fireflower in the back, sorting herbs.
"Hi Amberpaw!" She greeted as Amberpaw walked in.
"Hi Fireflower!"
"Dappletail kitted after the gathering. Their names are Skykit and Kestrelkit. Also, if you want you can go back to the apprentice den now."
"Thanks!"
She padded across the clearing, and sat down with Foxpaw.
At that moment, Feathersight walked up to her.
"What it it?" Amberpaw asked, confused.
"Never mind," Feathersight said, turning away, "I wouldn't want to get mixed up with a filthy half-clan like you," Feathersight growled.
He stormed away, his tail lashing.
Amberpaw stood up to follow him, confused.
"Don't," Foxpaw said, "He wants to to follow him. Let's ask Fernstorm instead."
They went to the Warriors Den, and found Fernstorm. They asked her their question.
"Well," Fernstorm said, "You father's from Mistclan. That would explain
that."
"So we're...half-clan?" Amberpaw whispered.
"Yes, but just because you're half-clan, than doesn't mean your half a warrior. Now go, your mentors are calling you."
They padded over to their mentors, and Amberpaw thought about what Fernstorm told her.
"Amberpaw, do you want to come with the next border patrol?"Sunshadow asked. "Leafstorm and Foxpaw are joining too."
"Okay, let's go!" Amberpaw mewed, bounding over to her brother.
The patrol consisted of them, their mentors, and Feathersight.
They walked across the border between CloudClan and RiverClan,
renewing scent markers and making sure their were no trespassers. They checked the other side too and headed back to camp.
"Leafstorm and I decided train you on fighting techniques together."
Sunshadow meowed as the patrol neared the sandy hollow.
"Great, when?"
"Now."
The four cats split off from the patrol and dropped into the sandy hollow. They taught the apprentices two different moves.
"The first one is a frontal attack. With sheathed claws, bring your paw down on on your opponents head. I'll do it on Leafstorm and you two try it on each other," Sunshadow instructed.
The two apprentices nodded and watched. Leafstorm also showed them a similar move, where you rear up and do the same thing. Then they tried it themselves.
Both of them got it right, and Leafstorm and Sunshadow decided to show them a counter attack."
I'll show the counter attack," Leafstorm meowed, "And then you two do
