To those who help others.

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Emily. Emily was a sixth grader who went to Lindon Middle School. Emily was an unhappy student. She did not believe in helping others and only wanted to do things her way. She would get very upset if she did not get things done her way.

"Emily! I have an idea for our project. Do you want to hear it?"
"We must do it
my way Ruby!"

Although Emily was good at all her subjects, she did not like anyone to be as good as her. She did not want any help from anyone. She thought if she was the best her parents would praise her more.

"Is there anything I can help you with Emily?"
"No! I can do it all on my own with help from no one."

Emily was very stubborn in her ways and did not like to help anyone else who might be struggling, for fear she would not be the best. She needed to be at the top of her class.

"Emily, would you be willing to help out a student who is struggling with math?"
"I don't think so. I am way too busy to focus on someone else's achievements."

On one particular day, as Emily was going to use the bathroom, she noticed someone crying. It turned out to be a girl named Ruby from her math class that she had worked on a project with previously in the week. She did not think much of it, and walked past her and continued on with her day.

Throughout the day Emily saw Ruby upset in class and the hallways after seeing her in the bathroom, but still did nothing about it.

As the day went on Emily started to think about Ruby more and couldn't get the image of her crying out of her head. Emily started to get confused about why she cared so much and tried to get the thought out of her head.

"I wonder how Ruby is feeling?"
After a few days pass Mrs. Lang called Emily to her classroom.
When Emily got there Mrs. Lang asks, "I heard you saw Ruby in the bathroom the other day crying. Why didn't you help her?"
Emily replies, "She's not my friend, why would I help her?

Mrs. Lang takes a long moment before replying, "Even though you may not be her friend, there is no harm in asking if they are okay. You may never know what someone is going through."
Emily is taken aback. She had never thought before that she could ever be of help to others. This suddenly scared her. She has never felt this way before and doesn't know what to say.

"You can always try helping her."

Mrs. Lang lets Emily go back to class, but she just can't stop thinking about how she ignored Ruby earlier. Emily decided to talk to Ruby in math class the next day.
