Democracy means 'rule by the people'. The word comes from the ancient Greek words 'demos' (the people) and 'kratos' (to rule). In a democracy, the people have the power to participate in decision-making, such as voting at elections. Each democracy is unique and works in different ways.

We know democracies are more peaceful, experience higher economic growth and lower poverty rates, protect the environment, provide more clean water, have higher life expectancies, and see more equitable distribution of education.      BURAK LEAL
