My brave little spider-boy, you make me laugh and smile every single day. As you grow up, always be fearless in all that you do, and continue to soar into new adventures. With all of my love, Daddy

Once upon a time, in a cozy little house, lived a little boy named William. William loved two things more than anything in the world: Spider-Man and his MOMMY.
He had Spider-Man pajamas, a Spider-Man backpack, and even a Spider-Man lunchbox. William had everything he needed to be Spider-Man. But there was one problem—William couldn't do anything without his mommy!

“Mommy, pour my berry milk!” he’d moan every morning, holding out his cup with a big pout.
4

"Mommy, I can't sleep without you!" he'd tug at her leg, until she agreed to lay next to him long into the night.
5

"Mommy, carry my animals!" he'd shriek, even though he could easily carry them himself.

William's family was getting drained from all of his constant moaning. His brother, Miles, would roll his eyes and say, “William, you’re not a baby anymore!” His big sister, Ava, would giggle and tease, “Mommy’s not your servant, do it yourself!”

And Daddy would often say, “William, you’re starting kindergarten soon. You’ve got to be a big boy!”

One sunny afternoon, William was swinging around the living room, pretending to shoot webs like Spider-Man. “Pew! Pew!" "Mommy pick up my webs!” he shouted, leaping onto the couch. Mommy smiled and said, “You know, William, Spider-Man doesn’t moan for someone to help him with things he can do all by himself. He’s brave and does things on his own—like pouring his own berry milk, sleeping in his own bed, and cleaning up his webs.”

William stopped mid-swing. “Buuuuuut, Spider-Man doesn’t need his mommy?” he asked, tilting his head.
“Of course he does, but not for every little thing” said Miles, as he dribbled the basketball through Williams legs. “Spider-Man swings into action all by himself!”

“Have you ever seen Spider-Man clinging onto Aunt May's leg!?,” added Ava, popping up from her Snap Chat.“If you want to be like Spider-Man at kindergarten, why not practice at home first?”

William thought about it. He did want to be like Spider-Man. “Okay,” he said with a determined nod. “I’ll try!”
15
That night, William climbed into his own bed. He hugged his Spider-Man stuffy tight and whispered, “Spider-Man doesn’t need his mommy to sleep. I can do this!” At first, he felt a little scared, but then he imagined swinging through the city, brave and strong. Soon the sandman came and began shoveling his magic sleep dust onto his eyes, which quickly became heavy, and he fell asleep—all by himself.

The next morning, William shuffled to the kitchen in his Spider-Man slippers. Instead of moaning, he grabbed the milk carton all by himself. It was heavy, and a little splashed on the table, but he poured it into his bowl of cereal. “I did it!” he cheered, holding up the carton of milk like a superhero trophy.
“Good job, Spider-Boy!” Mommy clapped. Miles gave him a fist bump, Daddy threw his hands in the air in excitement, and Ava giggled, “You’re getting strong!”
