1. "You shall have no other gods before me."
2. "You shall not make for yourself an idol."
These commandments are saying that God is supposed to be our only worship. Besides him, no one else is worthy of our praise. Because God is a jealous God, wants to be the focus of our adoration.
We can apply this to our lives by remembering to make God the center of our worship and give him all the praise. We can remind ourselves that it's not about us, it's about who we are in Christ and how we can bring him all the glory.
1. "Blessed are the poor in spirit for their's is the kingdom of heaven."
Poor in spirit doesn't mean sad, rather it means you have given everything to God. It means you have let go of all your earthly possessions and trust that God will sustain you through hard times. By freeing ourselves of earthly things, we are storing up treasure for ourselves in heaven.
We can remember that earthly wealth only takes you so far. Nothing can compare to divine splendor given to the person who entrusts their life and wellbeing to God.
1. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."
This Beatitude brings up the question of why does God allow us to suffer. Well, sometimes you have to suffer in order to have hope. A lot of people don't come to Christ until they go through a life changing tragedy. Out of suffering can come a renewed strength and faith in God, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.
We can remember that suffering can happen to bring us close to God. We don't always suffer because the wrong things we've done. We can remember that God could use our suffering to inspire someone else. When we suffer or go through hardships, we can rejoice and set a Christlike example for those around us.
1. "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God."
We are not supposed to use God's name in vain. Saying things like "Oh God!" or "Oh my God!" or "Jesus Christ!" and stuff like that outside of the context of praise is dishonoring to God. It is offensive and disrespectful.
We can be mindful of the words leaving our mouths. We can remind ourselves that God's name is holy and sacred. we should only use it in prayer and in worship.
