One beautiful Saturday morning, Marco and his mom decided to visit Grandma over the weekend. It was a weekly occurrence because Marco's dad worked on the weekends, so they liked to go to Grandma's house to spend some quality time.

Yayy! Hi Grandma!
Hey Mom!
Hello guys, come on in! Make yourself at home.
Grandma and Marco did many fun things during his stay over at Grandma's house. They baked cookies, watched cartoons, solved crossword puzzles, and played with Marco's trains. Marco loves his Grandma very much.

These are so yummy Grandma!
The secret is in the ratio of chocolate chips, my dear.

After a long day of lots of fun, Grandma tells Marco it is time for bed. Marco begins to clean up his toys as Grandma excuses herself to her room.

Okay Marco, it is time for bed. Clean up your toys so that we can go to sleep and greet the day feeling refreshed.
Okay Grandma, I will do that now.

Right before bed, Granny heads over to her bedroom, grabs a green bottle with these tiny pills inside, and takes two with some water. The bottle is labeled "Magnesium"
As Marco heads over to Grandma's room to say goodnight, he sees her as she takes her supplements. Marco doesn't really understand why she is taking them, and he worries for Grandma. To not disturb Grandma, he simply walks away and heads over to his room to get ready for bed.

What is Grandma doing?

Grandma heads over to his room to say goodnight. She tucks Marco in bed. Marco tries to go to sleep, but he can't stop thinking about what he saw, Grandma taking those pills. He worries that she is sick and that makes him sad.
Goodnight Grandma, I love you.

Good night, my dear. Sweet dreams.

I hope Grandma isn't sick...

The next morning, Marco, Grandma, and Mom are all having breakfast together. Marco nervously decides to ask Grandma what she was taking last night, the green bottle of pills. Mom and Grandma laugh about how worried Marco seemed to be when it was only her Magnesium supplements! He had nothing to be worried about, Grandma was doing great.

Grandma are you okay? Why were you taking green pills yesterday?
Hahaha, Marco I'm doing just fine honey. Those were just my supplements!
Your Grandma is okay Marco.
Marco is relieved for his Grandma. But now, he is curious about these supplements. If Grandma isn't sick, why is she taking them? What are these "supplements"? What is "Magnesium"?

Phew! What a relief!

What is "Magnesium" though...

Suddenly, Mom and Marco's stay at Grandma's house has come to an end. Marco and his mom pack up their things and say goodbye to Grandma.

Bye Guys! You be good to your Mom Marco!
Bye Grandma, I will!
Bye Mom! Love you!

As Marco was with his mom in the car on the ride home, he decided to ask Mom all about these supplements. He was very curious because he loves science and he wanted to know all about this. Mom began by explaining that Magnesium is an element that we can find on the periodic table. There are a lot of these kinds of elements, and Magnesium was the element in Grandma's supplements.
Mom, what did Grandma mean when she said she was taking those "supplements", and what is "Magnesium"?

Well honey, magnesium can be a supplement for your Grandma to take which just means extra help for the body, but it is also an element on the periodic table. The periodic table has a lot of different elements, you might learn this soon in science class.

Mom tells Marco that these elements are a part of science. A lot of these elements we can find in our own bodies, in water, in various chemicals, and even in light bulbs! Magnesium is the kind of element that we find in animal and plant life, she continues explaining. Magnesium is super important for your body because it helps with over 300 processes working out make your body function, like building strong muscles and bones as well as supporting enzymes that keep your body working properly. Our bodies actually require a small dose to function well, and we can find it in many of our foods!
Wow! That is so cool!

You can find these elements in a lot of different places. Magnesium is in the body, in plants, in foods, etc.

Marco is intrigued by what his Mom has told him, he now wants to find out more about this element with his own research. He wants to know even more about this because he cares about his Grandma very much and wants to assure that this "Magnesium" is good for his Grandma. He still has some questions about the periodic table and all this science stuff.

Hmmm.. I'm going to do my own research
