We are packed and ready to go!4

We ride in the airplane. We can see tiny houses down below. When we get really high all we can see are clouds.
5

We're here!
Let's learn about jungles!6

Jungles are located in a belt along the Earth's equator. It is an imaginary line drawn around the center of the
Earth. The equator is known as "The Tropical Zone."
The climate is warm and wet or warm and dry all year round.

7

You may have also heard of the word "rainforest"and think a rainforest and jungle are the same, but
did you know that there is a difference between a
rainforest and a jungle? A jungle is made up of a
large amount of all kinds of thick plants at the
ground level. In a jungle, the sunlight is able to reach
the ground. A rainforest has a thick canopy of trees.
Most of the sunlight hits the tops of these trees and
barely reaches the ground. Only a smaller amount of
shade-loving plants can grow.
8

A rainforest gets an average of 8 to 15 feet of rain each year. It gets so much rain, because it is so hot and wet.
The more hot air there is, the more water vapor a cloud
can hold. Since it is on the equator, a rainforest is in the
direct sunlight. The sun heats up water causing more water
vapor to go into the clouds and more rain to fall. It can rain
more than 90 days a year.

9

Jungles and rainforests have a diverse amount of plants and animals. Most of the plants and animals
scientists have discovered are found there. Millions
have been found and there are still more that
scientists are discovering. It has been estimated that
there are still millions of plants and animals to be
discovered. About 25% of our medicines come from
its plants, so you can see why rainforests are so
important.
10

In the year 1950 rainforests covered 15% of the Earth. Today they only cover about 6% of the Earth. Why are there
less rainforests now?
Trees in rainforests are cut down, so people can use the wood
to build houses, furniture, and make paper. There is a larger
amount of people in the world today, so more wood is needed.
Also people who live around rain forests cut down the trees to
use the land for farms.
To save rainforests we can plant trees where they have been cut down.
We can also make parks to protect the trees and animals.
11

Rainforests are important for the health of our planet.
Can you think of other ways we can save
the rainforest?
