Healthy food
from our country
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for many centuries has been a crossroad of various civilizations and religions, which made BiH’s kitchen one of the richest in Europe, even in the world. Food in BiH is rather fatty and delicious rather than healthy and light. It can be considered a food for real gourmands.
Greatly influenced by the Balkan geography and history, this cuisine is a mixture of a healthier Mediterranean fare (such as fish, seafood and pasta), typical Slavic dishes (like hearty soups and stews, pickled vegetables and rich tortes), and the Ottoman cuisine (think stuffed flaky pies, mouthwatering baklava-like desserts and stuffed apples).

Sataraš (vegetable stew)
Sataraš is a delightful dish, often served as a side dish. It is a light, juicy mix of vegetables slow-cooked on the stove. A perfect vegetarian option, order this dish and you are sure to be satisfied.

Bosnians eat a wide range of soups (čorba)
Bosanski lonac – Called “Bosnian pot” by English-speakers in the region is a blend of spices in tandem with meat and lots of vegetables makes this dish unique. The majority of the bulk of this dish is vegetables, so it is a nutritious choice. Bosanski lonac is a must-try!

Bamija, aka Okra Sauce
Bamija (baminja, bamia) is a divine sauce made with specific kind of okra and veal. Taste- wise this rich sauce falls somewhere between regular okra soup and gumbo. In Bosnia, okra is picked early (when just under 2 inches), lined on a thin rope, and then dried in a shaded, drafty place. Combined with tender, simmered veal, bamija sauce is perfect over rice or mashed potatoes.

Pastrmka (trout) – Fish is a great source of your daily protein intake, but much lighter than other proteins, such as beef or lamb. When you order pastrmka in Bosnia, you are in for a treat to the tastebuds and the soul. With omega-3 fatty acids and low-fat content, your body will be sure to thank you later.

Kajmak is a sweet yogurt and it’s often served alongside fried dough, making this a simple and budget dish. Count on this to fill your belly as a quick snack.

Grilled vegetables are usually served as a side dish or as a topping for sandwiches. A variety of vegetables grilled to perfection and often served as a side dish or a vegetarian main course. Common vegetables that are grilled include zucchini, bell peppers, and eggplant.

Shopska Salad
It's a simple mixed salad, which is usually served with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, and cheese.

Tufahije (Stuffed Apples)
A dessert made by stuffing apples with walnuts and sugar and cooking them in a syrup made from sugar, water, and lemon juice. Tougher apples (like granny smiths) are first peeled, and then boiled in simple syrup.
After they’re finished cooking, tufahije are stuffed with a combination of ground walnuts, milk and sugar. Stuffed tufahije are kept in the remaining simple syrup and decorated with a splash of whipped cream before serving.

Trileće is a popular dessert in Bosnia. It's funny that people either like it or don't eat it at all. There is no in between.
It consists of a light sponge cake soaked in a mixture of three types of milk (evaporated milk, condensed milk and whole milk), which gives it its name—derived from the Spanish Tres Leches (three milks).
