Sarah was ten years old when she first heard the word “freedom.”

Every day, she and her family worked in the hot sun picking cotton. They were not paid, and they were not allowed to leave.

One quiet night, Mama leaned in close. “Soon,” she whispered, “we’ll follow the stars.”
“Where will they take us?” Sarah asked.
To freedom,” Mama said. “There are good people like Harriet Tubman who will help. It’s called the Underground Railroad.”
Sarah’s eyes widened. “Is it a real train?”
Mama shook her head. “No trains. No tracks. Just a secret path, and brave people who guide us at night.”

One week later, their journey began. Sarah, Mama, and Papa slipped into the dark woods. Sarah held her cloth doll tightly and looked up. “There it is,” she whispered. “The North Star.”

They walked for hours through trees and across fields. The leaves rustled under their feet, and the moon lit their path guided by activists.

Their first stop was a quiet barn. A kind woman named Miss Lydia gave them warm bread, water, and blankets.
“You’ll be safe here,” she said. “Tomorrow, we’ll get you to the next stop.”
Each day, they hid. Sometimes in basements. Sometimes in fields. At night, they walked in silence.
Sarah was tired, but she didn’t complain. She kept her eyes on the stars.

Along the way, they met many helpers. One boy, about Sarah’s age, gave her a small wooden bird.
“For luck,” he said.
Sarah smiled. She imagined the bird flying ahead, showing them the way to freedom.

Days passed. Then weeks…

One cold night, they reached a wide river.
“This is it,” Papa whispered. “Once we cross, we’ll be free.”

They climbed into a small boat with a quiet man. He was a conductor on the Underground Railroad. He brought them across as the stars sparkled above.

The water was dark, but Sarah felt the wooden bird in her pocket and stayed brave.

On the other side, Mama cried happy tears.
“We made it,” she said. “We’re free.”

In the North, everything was different in all the best ways!
Sarah’s family found a really good home and Sarah went to school for the first time! She’d made lots of friends.
