The Underground Railroad was a network of safe houses along a route that would take an escaping slave to the north. The farther north a slave went the safer they were. Canada was the safest place because slavery was illegal there. 

The safest time was to travel at night. They would only have the stars at night to guide them.

While working the enslaved would sing songs that detailed the routes of the underground railroad.

The safe houses were called Stations. These could be hidden rooms, barns, or even wardrobes in which saves could hide in.

The most famous conductor was a woman called Harriet Tubman. 

She led her whole family and 300 slaves to freedom. 

She was the most wanted conductor of the railroad.

The Underground Railroad gave freedom to thousands of enslaved people and hope to even more.\

Those who escaped became human witnesses to the slave system with many of them going on the lecture circuit to explain to Northerners the horrors. Fredrick Douglass is the most famous for this.

 Others became members and supporters of the Underground Railroad.  

The success of the Underground Railroad hastened the destruction of slavery.
