Dedication
To my dear grandchildren —
May this story, passed down from your great-great-grandmother, remind you always of the wisdom found in simple tales. May you walk your path with courage, make choices with clarity, and carry our family’s stories in your heart as you create your own.
With all my love,
Nana

Outside a thatched hut, as the sun sank low and painted the sky in soft orange and purple, a grey-haired old lady sat on a woven mat. Around her gathered her grandchildren.
It was story time, and tonight their grandmother would share a lesson — one about greed.
Once upon a time, in the wild lands of Africa, there lived a big, spotted hyena.
One morning, the hyena woke up feeling very hungry. His tummy growled so loudly that the birds stopped singing for a moment.
He walked a long way through the grasslands. Soon, he came to a place where the path split into two. One path led to the left; the other path led to the right.
The hyena sniffed the air. “Mmm,” he said. “I can smell food down both paths! If I take just one, I’ll miss out on what’s on the other. But if I follow both, I’ll get double the food!”
The hyena spotted a rabbit sitting close by. He could have caught it easily and filled his belly. But the greedy hyena thought, ‘Why stop for a rabbit when I can have so much more?’
He put one paw on the left path and one paw on the right path. “Now I will have food from both sides!” he said to himself.
At first, the paths were close together. The hyena walked and smiled, dreaming of all the tasty meals he would soon have. But as he went farther, the paths began to move away from each other.

About the Author
The hyena story is one of many folktales that my grandmother passed down to me when I was a child growing up in Kenya.
Today, I continue this tradition by sharing these stories. Through these timeless tales, I hope to instil in the next generation the values of honesty, humility, and generosity.
It is my joy to preserve these rich lessons from our culture and to keep
the spirit of storytelling alive.
