My name is Chris Paul, a student reporter at Spanish River High School. My normal job is to cover games and get quotes from coaches and players.

But today was different, I stumbled upon a story that was frowned upon, one that could cost us a state title. Nobody wanted it printed.

While in the locker room trying to grab some interviews, I overheard a conversation.

"You didn't hear it from me," a player whispered, "but Kevin Durant isn't even eligible to play."

I looked in shock and fear. I froze. Kevin Durant was our best player and the championship was three days away.

Back at home, I started doing some digging. I checked every record there was from grades to eligibility forms and even transfer records.

I found Durant's records and his address was outside our district. Something wasn't adding up.

Before practice I looked at Coach Williams and asked him about my previous nights research. Coach Williams told me to drop the subject and worry about something else.

Soon after the Athletic Director walked in and I asked the same thing. He told me to stay in my lane.

That's when I knew something was being covered up.

After practice I had a one on one with Durant where I asked him the tough questions.

"Did you fake your address to play here?" I asked.

Durant stopped in his tracks. "I had to. I didn't have a choice. I needed a scholarship and this was my only chance.

I had an ethical question. Should I tell someone or keep the secret.

Back in class I met with my professor. She told me the hard truth.

"Chris, Journalism isn't about being liked. It's about being honest. If you have facts, you write them. But always verify them."

I spent the rest of the day rechecking my facts. They were right.
