The Legend of Lake Maninjau
A Folktale from West Sumatra, Indonesia
A long time ago, in a peaceful village nestled between lush green hills and a mighty volcano, lived a beautiful young woman named Siti Rasani. She was kind-hearted, gentle, and admired by many. Siti Rasani was the youngest sibling in a large family..

She had ten older brothers, known in the land as the Bujang Sembilan—even though their number was ten, the name reflected an old way of counting in the Minangkabau tradition.
The ten brothers loved Siti Rasani deeply. Since their parents had passed away, they felt responsible for protecting her.
However, they were also very proud and held their family's honor above all else.
One day, everything changed.
Rumors began to spread in the village that Siti Rasani was pregnant — and worse, that the father was unknown. Whispers floated from one house to another. Villagers began to talk behind her back. Heads turned whenever she walked by.
Her brothers, hearing these accusations, were shocked and angry. They could not believe their sister would bring shame upon their family.
Siti Rasani tried to speak.
“I am innocent,” she said with tears in her eyes. But her brothers would not listen.
“Enough!” shouted the eldest. “You have ruined our name!”
It was a long and painful journey. As they reached the top of the volcano, the sky darkened and a strange wind began to blow. There, standing near the crater, the brothers prepared to push her into the volcano.
But before they could, Siti Rasani raised her hands to the heavens and prayed:
> “Oh Almighty God, if I have sinned, then let me be punished.
But if I am innocent, show them the truth.
Let the earth speak for me.”
At that very moment, the ground began to shake violently. The sky turned black, and the volcano erupted with a thunderous roar. Ash and fire exploded into the air. The earth cracked, and the brothers were swallowed by the shaking land.
The entire mountain collapsed, and the village below was buried under lava and ash. Over time, water filled the giant crater left by the eruption, forming a vast and beautiful lake — today known as Lake Maninjau.
