This story was created to fulfill an English project assignment in the form of a narrative text for Grade 11 students at SMAN 2 Payakumbuh. The text was rewritten by Delisha Syadza Kurniawan from Class XI.F1. It tells the legend of Situ Bagendit, a traditional story that has been passed down through generations. The story not only entertains but also reflects the values, culture, and beliefs of the local community where the legend originated—Garut, West Java.

There lived a wealthy woman named
Nyai Bagendit. She was a widow who had inherited a great fortune from her late husband who had passed away earlier. Unfortunately, Nyai Bagendit and her husband were not blessed with any children, so she lived all alone.

Once upon a time in a village...

Throughout her life, Nyai Bagendit cared only about her wealth and was extremely afraid of becoming poor. This made her a stingy person, even though she was known as the richest person in the village.

Nyai Bagendit was also known by the villagers as a proud and cruel woman. She liked to show off her wealth in front of the villagers, most of whom were poor and lived difficult lives.

If someone borrowed money from her, Nyai Bagendit would charge them a very high interest rate. Those who couldn’t repay her would be forced to give up their homes and belongings. To collect debts, she often sent enforcers who acted harshly.

One day, Nyai Bagendit was leisurely
counting her money and gold in her yard. Suddenly, an old beggar appeared, walking
with a wooden stick. He was dirty and ragged, and came to her asking for a glass of water because he was thirsty from a long journey.

"Situ Bagendit" is a West Javanese folktale about a wealthy but greedy woman named Nyi Bagendit. Her cruelty toward the poor led to a curse that caused her village to sink into a lake, now known as Situ Bagendit.
