Legends are traditional stories passed down from one generation to another. They are not only entertaining but also teach moral lessons about life. In Payakumbuh, West Sumatra, there is a well-known legend about a round hill and a split rock, called Bukik Bulek and Batu Balang. This story tells about two brothers, their greed, and the consequences that followed. Until today, these places still exist, and the story is told to remind people about the value of peace and harmony in the family

Orientation
A long time ago, in a peaceful village near Harau Valley, Payakumbuh, lived a wise and respected old man. He had two sons who were very different in character. The older brother was calm and patient, while the younger brother was ambitious and often acted without thinking. The father loved both of them equally. Before his death, he decided to divide his land equally between the two sons, hoping that they would live happily and peacefully side by side.

Complication
At first, everything seemed fine, but as time passed, the younger brother felt dissatisfied with the land he had received. He began to think that his portion was too small compared to his brother’s. His greed grew, and he tried to take his older brother’s land by force. The older brother refused to give it up, and soon the disagreement turned into a serious conflict. The villagers tried to mediate, but neither side wanted to give in. The arguments became more frequent and heated.

Climax
One day, the brothers met near a large rock to argue once again. Their voices grew louder, and anger filled the air. The sky suddenly became dark, and strong winds began to blow. Thunder roared like the sound of a hundred drums, and the ground started to tremble violently. The villagers, frightened by what they saw, ran away and left the brothers alone.

Resolution
In an instant, a strange thing happened. The younger brother disappeared, and in his place stood a perfectly round hill, which people later called Bukik Bulek. The large rock where they had been arguing was split into two pieces, now known as Batu Balang. The villagers believed that nature, or perhaps a divine power, had punished the younger brother for his greed and for disturbing the peace of the village.

Re-Orientation
From that day on, Bukik Bulek and Batu Balang became silent witnesses to the tragedy. The villagers often told the story to their children so that they would not repeat the same mistakes. The legend is still remembered in Payakumbuh as a warning that greed and conflict can destroy even the closest relationships.

Moral Value
This legend teaches us that greed and fighting between family members can lead to disaster. It is better to live in peace, share fairly, and solve problems with patience and wisdom.
