The doctor is the sender, or the one who relays the message. She encodes, or puts together, the message that she wants to send.
*I need to inform Ms. Lee about her blood test results.*

*Finally, my shift is over! I wonder what I'll do when I get home...Oh, someone's calling me*

"Hello, Ms. Lee. I'm calling you to tell you about your blood test. The results say you have an iron deficiency, which can cause anemia and become severe if not taken seriously. Please remember to buy more pills and take them every day. And please pay more attention to your health and take breaks from work when necessary."

Ms. Lee is the receiver, or the person who receives the message. The channel, or the way the message is sent, is verbally and over the phone.

Ms. Lee is outside, and it is noisy and crowded. This is the barrier, or something that blocks the message from being relayed.

Blah blah blah
Blah blah blah
Blah blah blah
*Hmm, I have a lot of work I need to do when I get home. I still have some questions about that one assignment. Wait, I think it was due today. Ugh, I also have to go grocery shopping as well...*

Ms. Lee is distracted by thinking about what she has to do when she goes home. This is the filter, or something that is preventing the message from being interpreted.

"Ms. Lee...blood test... anemia... serious...breaks"

The words that Ms. Lee hears from the other end are the decoding of the message. The decoding is how the receiver interprets the message.

"Ms. Lee, are you still there..?"

"Huh? Oh, yes, sorry. Thanks for calling, Doctor."
Ms. Lee's response is the feedback, or the message sent by the receiver. The channel for the message is verbal and over the phone.

A Few Days Later

"OK, I'm almost done with my work. I just have a couple more assignments left, and then I can go home!"
