Wind in the Window
Diamond woke up on a sunny Thursday. She could hear the Crystal River and the Crystal Falls splashing, gushing, and running down the hills through her window. She walked to the window and heard the shimmering crystal birds singing. The realm glowed, and glimmered. She heard the world, all of it just outside her window. The Crystal Realm was her home, and she never wanted to let it go.
She was wearing a white nightgown and her light tan hair was in two small braids.
Diamond was a Princess. She was the daughter of King Sky and Queen Emeralda. She had brilliant violet eyes. She was eleven years old. She had an older sister, Amber, and an older brother, Jasper. Though they were twins, Amber and Jasper were as different as could be. Amber was into fashion, beauty, and design. Jasper, on the other hand, was childlike, playful, and did not care about fashion or anything Amber was into. They were both thirteen years old.
The door opened, and a plump woman with brown hair wearing a yellow dress with blue lacing walked in.
“Good morning, Ms. Hopper.” Diamond said to the woman.
“A good morning to you too, Princess.” Ms. Hopper replied.
“I told you this already. You don’t have to call me that, Ms. Hopper.” Diamond said, annoyed.
“It’s morning, up, up! Let’s get you changed.” Ms. Hopper said, waving her comment away as if it where just some mere fly. She opened a sea blue door on the left side of the room and walked inside. A couple seconds later, she walked out with a velvet silk dress saying, “The most talented designers made this for you, and it’s your favorite!”
“No, I don’t want to wear that today.” Diamond said, walking into the closet, she came out with a lemon colored shirt and long blue pants.
“Ok, if you insist.” Ms. Hopper said, putting back the silk dress.
After Diamond changed, she went downstairs for breakfast. The dining room was gigantic, with
marble floors and a high sealing that a giant could stand upright in without even grazing their head on it. A huge golden chandelier hung in the middle of the sealing. The crystals on the chandelier shimmered and reflected the light from the hundreds of candles inside, casting small reflections of the light onto the ground bellow.
Diamond walked to the dining table and saw her mother, Queen Emeralda. She was wearing a sky blue dress and had her brown hair up in a bun at the top of her head. Her father, King Sky, was wearing a dark red uniform and matching pants. Today, the food was on golden plates, and they were having bread, milk, yogurt, and of course, the Crystal Realms most famous fruit, the crystal pear.
Diamond grabbed a plate and some food. She sat down and asked,
“You know…I haven’t seen Amber or Jasper yet this morning. Have you?”
“Here we are!” Amber called from the stairs. Amber had long, flowing, amber-colored hair and green eyes. She was wearing a blue dress with opals and silver slippers.
“What’s for breakfast?” Jasper asked, sliding down the banister. “Oh! Looks good!” He said, running
over to the table. He grabbed a plate and served himself almost all the food. He grabbed two pieces of bread, a big spoonful of yogurt, got a cup and filled it up with milk, and grabbed three crystal pears.
Jasper had flaming red hair and was wearing green pants and a green shirt, matching his eyes.
“Good morning you two!” King Sky said.
“Diamond, what are you wearing?!” Amber asked. “Just please don’t come--Save some for me, Jasper!” She yelled to him, hurrying down the stairs still in the most elegant way possible holding up her dress, Stumbling a little at the bottom of the stairs
“I will!” Jasper said, rolling his eyes at her.
After everyone had food and sat down, (Jasper was already on thirds.) Their father asked, “What are you kids going to do today?”
“I’m going to go horse riding with my village friends, Mica and Amethyst!” Diamond said happily.
“Me, Opal, and Quartz are going to talk about the new dress that is now for sale.” Amber said, lightly dabbing her lips with a hot pink napkin. "Also, father? If you don't mind me saying it, your outfit looks
like your wearing pajamas." Their father chuckled.
“I’m going to go visit Lazuli and his new dog!” Jasper said excitedly.
“What are you doing today?” Diamond asked their parents.
“We’re going to go shopping for something special!” Her mother said, winking at Diamond. Diamond smiled.
Yes, Diamond’s birthday was just in two days. She couldn’t wait! She’d been hoping she’d get a copy of a book called, “The Legend of the Crystal Unicorns.” Amber’s friend, Opal, was really into books and told Diamond about them.
After they ate, they all went to their activities. Talking about how fun it would be on the way.
Chapter 2
On the Wind
“Hey, Diamond!” Mica said running from a hopscotch game.
“Hi, guys!” Diamond said, jumping out of a big blue carriage that had brought her there, unlatching a tan-colored horse with a brown saddle and matching rains from the carriage.
“We're going to have so much fun today!” Amethyst said excitedly, helping Diamond untie the horse.
“Ok, I’m ready. Let’s go!” Dimond said, jumping on her horse and trotting to a trail at the end of the long, dirt road.
“Password!” A small enchanted mustered-colored crystal gnome on the left of Diamond said.
“Flappy-woo!” Amethyst said to the gnome, wiggling her arms about like an octopuses.
The gnome sprang to life, stepped out of the way, and let them pass.
As the three friends rode along the winding, dusty, dirt road, nobody saw the wind started to pick up.
Until…
“Did you hear that?!” Diamond said, hoping of her horse.
She had heard something, carried on the wind, that traveled through the air. She didn’t know what it was, but it felt familiar, and she didn’t like it.
“What is it?” Amethyst said, hiding behind Mica.
“Shh, for a second. Maybe I’ll hear it then.” Diamond said to them.
She wanted to hear it again, straining to hear it, to understand
what it was saying, then, she heard it. Slow and scary, open and wide.
“Finally, I’m free… Angel will regret this. Time for my sshow… I’m coming, Angel.”
Then, it was gone. As quickly as it came. Gone like the wind.
Chapter 3
One Surprise
Diamond was back in the palace, her home, her safe space. At least, she thought it was. After the incident in the woods, her soul was scared right out of her.
After the voice was gone, she had asked Amethyst and Mica if they had heard it too.
“Um… no, I didn’t.” Mica and Amethyst had said.
Diamond knew that something bad was going to happen, and she didn't like it.
She didn’t want to tell her parents, because her father would cancel her birthday, and forget all about it.
The next day, she changed into a dark blue dress with stitching of raindrops on it and matching shoes.
She walked downstairs and was welcomed by the wonderful smells of blueberry pancakes.
“Happy birthday eve to you!” Jasper said, bringing Diamond to the busy, bustling serving area.
“There you are, Diamond!” Amber said.
“Ah, good morning princess,” Mr. Jonathan, (their cook) said.
"I’ve got something special for you.” He said, bringing Diamond into the kitchen. “Here you go.” He said, giving her a little box wrapped in brown paper. “A pre-birthday gift”
“Really? Oh, Mr. Jonathan, you don’t have to do that.” Diamond said, smiling up at him.
Though she wanted to see what was inside the box, she tried to put it back in Mr. Jonathan’s hands.
“You’ve done so much for me already, Mr. Jonathan, you don’t have to give me a birthday present.” She said to him.
“It’s OK, princess, just take it.” Mr. Jonathan said, smiling at her.
“OK, fine.” Diamond said, returning the smile.
She opened the box and inside was a gem that was about the size of Diamond’s palm. It was red with streaks of gold. Diamond smiled from ear to ear.
“Diamond! Where are you?” Her mother called
“I’m coming!” Diamond called back. “Thank you.”
"Just don't tell or show anyone." Mr. Jonathan said. Diamond looked at him, puzzled.
"Your mother doesn't want me to give you a birthday present because I've 'already done so much.' but I just had to give you one." Diamond thanked Mr. Jonathan again and ran over to the table to join her family.
Chapter 4
Secret Sneak Away
Diamond woke up before anyone else in the palace. She changed into yellow pants and a white shirt. She was going to see Mica and Amethyst for a birthday tea party. As she changed, she looked at the gem Mr. Jonathan gave her. "Don't tell or show anyone." He had said. Why? Diamond thought as she rushed downstairs, grabbed a crystal pear to eat on the way, ran to the stables and grabbed her horse, and galloped to the village.
Diamond got Mica and Amethyst and they had the best secret tea party ever. They talked, laughed, and sang happily. After a
while, Diamond announced that she had to go. They said goodbye as Diamond galloped away.
Diamond galloped swiftly to the palace. She changed her clothes, grabbed the gem and placed it in a bag, she wanted to show some of her friends at the party. She knew that Mr. Jonathan had said not to
show anyone, but Diamond couldn't resist. She ran downstairs as quick as lightning, (Jasper would be very impressed.) and walked into the dining room.
Chapter 5
Happy Doomsday
“Oh. Hey Diamond! I have something for you.” Jasper said with a mouth full of cake as she walked in. “I want to give you your birthday present,” Jasper said, reaching under his chair and grabbing a package wrapped in colorful cloth and handing it to Diamond.
She opened the package and found a leather book inside. The title read, The Legend of the Crystal Unicorns.
“No way! Thank you, Jasper!” Diamond said, hugging her brother excitedly.
“No problem.” Jasper said, smiling.
A servant walked into the room and cleared his throat.
Everyone stopped talking.
“It is almost time for the princess's party, your highnesses.” The servant said in a strong accent.
“Thank you, Mr. Lucas. Tell everyone we'll be there shortly.” Queen Emerald said to him.
Amber stood up and said, “Well, the party is starting soon, and I don’t want to look like this. This outfit is so last Thursday. I’m going to change.” And she elegantly walked out the door.
After Diamond ate some breakfast, she walked outside to the courtyard where her party was being held. As Diamond walked outside, she was greeted by a large group of her guests.
“Happy birthday, Diamond!” They all said. Someone in the crowd started singing, “Happy Birthday”
“Thank you all for coming to my birthday party!” Diamond said to everyone. Everyone cheered. “Let the party begin!” she said.
Everyone ran to the party, jumbling Diamond about. In the hustle, the gem Mr. Jonathan gave her fell out of her bag. It seemed to take the gem a thousand years to fall, and to Diamond's utter dismay, hit the ground and split in two. One side of the gem turned red, and the other gold. Frozen in fear of what
might happen, Diamond watched in horror as the red side of the gem started smoking with red fog.
might happen, Diamond watched in horror as the red side of the gem started smoking with red fog.
Chapter 6
Pig, Cow, Chicken, Oh My!
Somebody screamed. Diamond couldn’t scream. She was petrified with fear.
There were clouds in the sky now, and they didn’t look like wight, fluffy cotton candy, they looked like when the stable cat got scared. The gem was growing now, and forming into something that looked like a human
“It’s Devil.” Opal said in horror, stepping back and yelling, for the first time Diamond ever heard. “Get everyone out and away now!” She yelled to the guards.
The gem was now the size of a full-grown man, with goat legs
and the other half of him human, but the skin was red. He had dark red hair, and black horns.
“Hello everyone!” He said. The gem had stopped smoking, and the red part of the gem was gone completely.
“Thanks to the one you call, Mr. John, or I think it was Jonathan, well whatever, thanks to him, I'm free! Oh! you even set up a welcome party for me. That’s SO sweet!”
“Who are you?” Someone peeped.
“Like that little girl said,” he said, pointing at Opal. “I AM…(stop for dramatic effect)… DEVIL!!” He said, mimicking the sound of lightning.
“You don’t seem like a Devil.” Someone said.
“Oh, no, no, no, no” Opal was saying, backing up slowly.
“Well, I AM Devil,” he said, losing patience. “And I’ll prove it to you.” He pointed at Opal and said, “Stone, rock, Opal. Pig, cow, chicken!”
A blast of red light erupted from the tip of his finger, straight towards Opal. Right before it hit her, a guard jumped in front of the beam of light. It hit the guard, he glowed for a second, and the next second, he was a chicken.
“Everyone run!” Opal yelled, following her own orders and running.
Devil repeated the chant he used. Soon, the courtyard was full of chickens, pigs, and cows. Diamond grabbed the gold halve of the gem at her feet.
“Amber!” Diamond yelled as Amber was turned into a pig.
Opal grabbed Diamond’s arm and ran, running in a zigzag line to dodge Devils attacks. “We have to go back for them!” Diamond yelled, trying to loosen Opal’s grip on her.
“Yes, after we get you and me away, get your friends, find Angel, and then we can come back.” Opal said calmly, pulling Diamond inside and closing the heavy front doors and locking them.
“I don’t understand, who’s Devil, why is he wrecking the party like that, why do you know about him, and who in all realms, is Angel.” Diamond said as the two girls ran up the stairs to Diamond’s room.
“I’ll tell you when we get to your room.” Opal replied, getting to the top of the stairs, and running down the hall to Diamond’s room. “Get in, quickly.” She said, opening the door for Diamond and beckoning her inside.
“OK, tell me now.” Diamond said, sitting on her bed and looking at Opal.
Opal sighed and sat down and began to tell her the story of Devil and Angel.
Chapter 7
A Well-Needed Story
“You know how I always read ancient mythology?”
Diamond nodded.
“Well, I once literally stumbled on a story, called ‘The Legend of Devil and Angel’ . It looked interesting, so I read it. It said that when the realms were new, Devil caused ruckus and chaos. Then Angel came. She trapped Devil and her in a gem. And when the gem breaks, Devil is released where the red half was. Angel appears in a far-off realm.”
Opal finessed, looking out Diamond’s window at the ruckus in the courtyard.
“Where is that far-off realm?” Diamond asked, hoping Opal knew.
Opal shook her head and sighed. “I don’t know.” she said.
Diamond looked down at the gold halve of the gem in her hands. Diamond noticed that it was
vibrating. Not a big vibration, but just a small quiver, like a leaf in a small breeze.
“Opal, look.” Diamond said, showing her the vibrating rock.
“Why is it doing that?” Opal asked, stepping back as if the gem might explode.
“I don’t know. Maybe it has some relationship to Angel?” Diamond said, thinking hard.
“Oh!” Opal said, jumping out of her chair. “Wait, no, I don’t think so.” She settled back down.
“What is it? I want to hear your idea. I sure don’t have any.” Diamond said.
“Well, maybe the gem is vibrating because it’s showing what direction Angel is.” Opal said. “Maybe if you turn the other way?”
“OK, let’s give it a try.” Diamond said. She turned around. The gem stopped vibrating.
“What happened?” Opal asked breathlessly, walking over to her.
“It stopped!” Diamond said happily.
“Yes!” Opal said. She walked over to Diamond’s bed and pulled off a blanket. “Grab some bags.” She said. “It’s time to go find Angel.”
Chapter 8
Time to go
Diamond and Opal packed food, clothes, coins, and blankets for the journey.
“Are we all packed up?” Opal asked, as Diamond tried to close a tightly stuffed bag.
“Yep.” Diamond said, grunting as she tried to close the bag.
After they got the bag closed, they sneaked through the back entrance of the palace. The two girls climbed onto their horses and galloped into the village.
“You WHAT?!” Amethyst yelled. Mica shushed her.
Diamond and Opal told Mica and Amethyst what had happened and what they were going to do.
“Well, I'm a hundred percent going to go with you. My parents are on a business trip, so I don’t need to worry about persuading them that I need to go.” Mica said. Her parents were farmers, so they travel around the world selling their crops.
“Mine are too. But-” Amethyst said.
“Great! Let’s go!” Diamond said. “Grab your horses and pack as much food and clothes you can pack.”
Mica jumped up and ran into her house to pack. Amethyst got up and slowly walked to her house, grumbling something about “I never agreed to that.”
A couple minutes later, Mica and Amethyst were packed up, on their horses, and ready to go.
“Let’s go find Angel!” Diamond said marching forward.
They had no trouble getting out of the village; Devil wasn’t there yet, so the girls easily could ride through the village, warning everyone about Devil. Finally, the girls made it to the beginning of the Crystal Forest, the border between the other realms.
The next five days were mostly the same, riding through the day, only stopping to rest, eat, and get a drink from a nearby stream or river. And at the end of the day, they set up camp, built a fire, and set out the blankets for beds, eating dinner, and falling asleep.
Following the gem was, as Amethyst said, "As easy as saying 'Suffertum' five times fast." The girls tried
saying suffertum five times fast." The girls tried saying suffertum five times fast, and they didn't think it was very easy. After a couple more days, the girls were sore and tired.
“I’m pretty sure there’s a town somewhere near here.” Diamond said, trying to remember.
“Hey, look!” Amethyst said, pointing at a sign in the road.
She jumped off her horse and walked over to the sign. She wiped off moss and leaves and read aloud,
“Rigged Town in six miles. The town of smiles!” she read.
“The town of smiles?” Mica asked, walking to the sign to check if Amethyst read it right.
“I’m pretty sure that’s what it says.” Amethyst said. “Well at least it’s a town. I think we should go. All in favor?”
Everyone raised their hands.
“Then Rigged Town it is!” Diamond said, walking in the direction the sign pointed.
Chapter 9
Not a Big Welcome
As the girls entered the town, people heard them coming, looking in their direction, glaring at them, then went back to whatever they were doing.
“Didn’t you say this was the town of smiles?” Mica asked Amethyst.
“Do you think they know we accidentally released Devil?” Amethyst asked. “Maybe that’s why they're glaring at us?”
Somebody looked in their direction. Diamond quickly hid the gem in her bag. She didn’t want anyone to try to steal it.
“What did you just say?” A man said in a gruff voice. The man had a long, shaggy gray beard, dark skin, and a small, worn hat on his head that said, “Town Chief” In worn gold letters.
“Umm…” Amethyst sputtered, trying to think of a good lie. “I said, ‘do you think they know we
accidentally made cherry jubilee?’” Little beads of sweat formed on her forehead. Amethyst wasn't very good at lying.
“I know that’s not what you said. I may look old, but my hearing is as sharp as a cutlass!" the man said, waving his fist in the air, almost smacking someone in the face.
"Then why did you ask us?" Opal asked the man.
"Dramatic affect." The man said without hesitation. "Follow me."
They jumped off their horses and followed the man as he hobbled into an empty alleyway.
“So,” he said. “I will introduce myself to you. But you will not tell me your names, because that is none of my business.” He looked at them for a second. “My name is Skarn.”
“Nice to meet you.” They said.
“I am not meat.” Skarn said, looking puzzled. “OK, time to get down to business.” He said, Now looking very serious. “I heard her,” He pointed at Amethyst. “Talking about how you accidentally freed the world-ender Devil?”
Opal nodded.
“Hmm…Ok then.” He paused, thought for a moment, then said, “I presume you are going to find Angel?”
The girls nodded.
“Diamond, do you have the gem?” Opal asked.
“No, I left it in a bag…oh, no!” Diamond suddenly jumped up and ran to her horse, with the girls and Skarn following behind. Diamond looked at her horse for the bag she had tucked the gem in.
“Where is it, where is it!” She said, very worried. What if someone stole the gem!? Diamond thought No, it’s not what if. Someone did!
“Diamond, what is it?” Opal asked, starting to worry by the look on Diamond’s face.
“I think…I think someone stole the gem.”
Chapter 10
Find It
“What!?” Amethyst yelled. Mica shushed her. “This is not good.” She said, pulling on her braids.
“How are we supposed to find who did it?” Opal asked, her voice panicked.
“I know how to. Follow me.” Skarn said calmly. He walked to a podium in the middle of the town. He stepped on it and called,
“Citizens of Rigged Town!”. Everyone stopped what they were doing and walked over to the podium. “My friends here have been robbed!” He pointed at them. The crowd started murmuring. “Thief, come up here and return the stolen item!”
Nothing happened.
“Um… OK.” Skarn said, wringing his hands nervously. “Anyone who saw the theft, come up!”
A person that looked about twenty years old walked forward.
“Um… I saw a red bird carrying a gold gem, is that important?” He asked, his voice unsure.
“Yes! Which way did it go?” Diamond asked.
“Um… that way-ish?” He said, pointing towards forest at the end of the town.
“There’s no time to lose! Come on girls! Let’s go!” Diamond yelled. She jumped on her horse and galloped in the direction the citizen pointed. The girls hopped on their horses and galloped to Diamond, saying goodbye to Skarn.
Diamond stopped, looking up into a tree.
“Do you see it?” Mica asked, hopping off her horse.
“I do. But I don’t know how to get it.” Diamond said, walking slowly around the tree.
“I know exactly what to do!” Amethyst said, jumping off her horse and rummaging through one of her saddlebags. She pulled out a grappling rope and tossed one end into the tree, latching it on to a tree branch.
“Bulls-eye!” Mica cheered.
Amethyst climbed the rope up into the tree. Once at the top, she dived at the bird, grabbing the gem from the bird's beak. She landed on her horse, galloping away.
“Let’s go!” She yelled, gaping at the tree the red bird was in.
The girls turned their heads to see what Amethyst was looking at. They gasped. Hundreds of other red birds were chasing them.
“Are they saying something?” Opal asked, slapping a bird that was pecking at her head.
The girls listened. The birds were saying something. It sounded horrible. All the birds speaking in unison, their high, unearthly, echoing voices getting louder and louder, until the four girls understood.
“You cannot get away!” The birds chanted, gaining on the girls and trapping them in a circle. “You think you can stop Devil? You are nothing but four useless girls!”
“These are Devil’s birds!” Opal shouted over the birds chanting. “He's gained enough power to start making things!”
“What are we supposed to do?” Mica called. “There's no way to get out!”
“There’s always a way.” Diamond said, looking around. “There!” She said, pointing to a small gap in the circling birds.
The girls barged through, getting out, and galloping quickly away.
“Why aren't the birds following us?” Amethyst asked, looking behind her, expecting a red bird to fly at her face.
“That was probably just a distraction." Opal said. “We moved a lot in that swirling bird tornado of doom.”
"How are we ever going to get to Angel?!" Amethyst groaned.
“We can do this. And even if Devil thinks we’re useless and can’t do anything, we’ll show him better than that!” diamond said, pumping her fist in the air.
