Jay looked around her empty house, boxes were piled up in corners, furniture being moved to the moving truck, and Jay's plushes stuffed in a box that lay near her room.
Jay's family was moving, she did everything she could to stop it, but it was useless, anyways, their parents had already bought the house. "Do we really have to move?" Jay asked aloud, her mom heard. "Yes, Jay" she said, her mom picked up a heavy box and carried it all the way to the moving truck "it will be exciting, you will see!" She added, hugging Jay. Jay felt much better, but she still didn't want to move. Jay went to her bedroom upstaris, a photo of her and her BFF, May, lay on the ground around all the boxes, Jay picked it up and felt a tear slid down her cheek.
"why do we have to move?" She sobbed. Her mom called to her:
"JAY! hurry up, we will be late!!" And Jay rushed downstairs so slowly it was hardly noticeable. Her little sister, Kay, walked into the room, holding her teddy bear named ted. "It is okay, Jay" she said quietly, holding on to the railing. "No it is NOT okay!!" Jay screamed, tears welling her eyes. Kay moved aside, "there you are, Jay, i was looking for you. Hurry, we better get to our new house!" Said her mom cheerfuly. Jay ran up the hills, so slowly. The moving truck man was probably tired of waiting.
Jay made it down the stairs and began walking slower out the door. Her mom sighed and picked Jay up "aren't you forgetting something?" Jay asked. Her plushes were still piled up in the box, her mom remembered and put Jay down, she hurried to go look for the box of plushes. Jay waited on the sidewalk with Kay.
The moving truck man put his head down in the steering wheel and it made a honk that made Jay jump. Finally, Jay's mom was back with the box of plushes that said 'Jay ain't movin' anywhere' On scribbly red sharpie, "it was easy to find since it was the only box left in the house" giggled her mom.
Jay had slept in the car ride and she didn't know for how long, when she woke up, she saw an apartment building made out of mabrle and glass, near the lobby were bushes with pink flowers. Jay looked around in wonder "i tought you said a HOUSE not an apartment" Jay told her mom, giggling.
"I know, but it costs less" her mom said, and began unpacking with mr. Khirp, Jay's dad. When they were inside, Jay said "well,
i better go to school" and she walked out the door when her mom yelled "STOP!!!" Jay turned around. "Why??" She asked.
"You can't go by yourself! You have to wait until the school bus comes" her mom explained, dragging the wardrobe to the elevator. "And in how long is this bus gonna get here?" Jay asked. "I don't know!!" Her mom cried as she struggled with the bed, her tone softened again "you can help us unpack, meanwhile" she suggested, handing Jay a big box. Jay sighed and carried the box upstairs, a minute went by and Jay already felt tired "mom, why do i have to take this--" her mom cut her off "why do you think there is an elevator here?" She giggled, Jay heard some tires screeching, she quickly got in the elevator and dropped the box in her apartment, she rushed down the
Elevator again and got to the lobby just in time to see a yellow bus parked in the corner, Jay ran to the bus and got inside.
She sat next to a girl with brown hair, and a green sweater.
"Hi, my name is Jay" Jay introduced herself, the girl smiled "i am Carla"
At school, Jay pushed open the doors and Carla led her to her classroom, 103, Jay saw all the studants chattering, there was so much noise, Jay's ears ringed when she entered her classroom, it was quiet, and scented with something that smelled like vainilla. Jay felt nervous, ALL the children stared at her and her messy bun on her hair, she hadn't had time to arrange it well because of all the moving going on.
"Welcome, Jay" said the teacher, she had pretty black hair and glasses, she wore a blue dress with silk flowers on the collar.
"class, may i introduce you to Jay..." the teacher looked at a paper "Chirp" she said. The class was silent, all of a sudden, a boy shouted "Jay Chirp! She is a bird!" And he started making bird noises. Jay's cheeks were suddenly red "i- it is Khirp" she said really embarrased. The teacher looked at her, the class suddenly burst with laughter. Jay felt her forehead warm.
"I met her in the bus" Carla said, she was the only one who didn't laugh. Jay looked at her, her eyes welled with tears.
"I made a mistake" the teacher suddenly went pale and looked at Jay for help. "My name is Jay Khirp" she said "Khirp with a K"
The teacher looked embarrased, some children still giggled.
Until, another boy burst out again "i don’t care if it is with a K or a C, you are still a bird!" He burst in laughing again, more and more boys joined him until half the class was laughing at
Jay, again. Jay burst in crying now and hid her face in her hands "ughhh! this is the worst!" she cried and ran out of the classroom, she heard her teacher grouch at the bullies.
Jay sat with her head in her knees on the hallway, she sobbed harder when she tought about her silly last name "why Khirp? Why not something nicer?" sobbed Jay, a girl with blonde hair sat next to Jay, she patted her "are you new?" She asked, Jay wiped her tears away and looked at the girl and nodded "you?" She asked, the girl smiled "no, i am just late, my name is Rosie" Jay felt embarrased to have behaved as a crybaby in front of her
So she stood up tall, and stomped to the classroom, but before she opened the door to room 103, Rosie asked "why were you crying?" And Jay looked at her "kids made fun of me" she said. "Why?" Rosie asked again "because of my last name..." Rosie's eyebrows shot up in surprise "what last name?" She put one hand on her hip. Jay sighed, might just tell her "Khirp" she said "my name is Jay Khirp. not Chirp" Rosie widened her eyes like plates "but why would you be embarrased? It is such a cute name!" She gasped.
"I don't feel that way" sulked Jay. She heard a BANG! noise behind the classroom door. "Hey, Blue Jay Chirp, we hear you over there!" Erick shouted. Great, now she was being called a blue jay?! (Well, it obviously makes sense!) Jay opened the door
And walked into the classroom with reddened cheeks.
Erick shouted again "hey, Blue Jay!" He giggled "you seat is next to mine, see?" He pointed to a empty desk beside him.
"great, oh no" tought Jay as she walked to her desk and sat down. "And for your information, i am not a blue jay!" She hissed at Erick, Jay felt something sticky on the bottom of her jeans, she got up. "EW!" Cried Jay, chewing gum was on her seat and had gotten stuck to her jeans! "EW EW EWW!!!!" Jay shrieked
she spinned and did everything she could to get it OFF!!
when she finally could get it off her jeans, all eyes were on her. Jay tought what she should do with the gum, the STICKY chewed chewing gum that she held on her finger, she tought of throwing it away and forgetting about it, but instead, she grab-
bed it and stuck it in Erick's shirt. Erick howled like a wolf, he moved like a snake, and tried hard to get the pink, drooly gum out of his shirt. "MY SHIRT!!!!!" he shrieked. Jay sat back in her seat and saw that Elsa, a girl with reddish hair, came back from the bathroom "you missed all the action!" Jay tought. Elsa saw Erick howling with a chewing gum in his shirt, and Jay sitting there and looking innocent. Elsa gasped loudly and shrieked "ERICK! IS THAT THE CHEWING GUM I GAVE YOU?!" yelled Elsa so loud the floor shaked. She made a "hmph!" Sound and stomped her foot. Jay decided to tattle, now it was more obvious that Erick stuck the gum in her chair "HE stuck that gum in my seat!" Cried Jay, crossing her arms. "And why is it in his shirt?" A girl named Anna asked. uhmm... Jay wasn't sure
What to answer, altough, the teacher obviously saw her stick it in his shirt, she did shriek. "He--" Jay stammered, Erick had managed to pull the sticky mess out of his dino-shirt, he glared at Jay "yes, YOU--" he replied, raising his hand where he held the gum, his shirt ended up a bit stained, it had a pink circle on its white surface. "ENOUGH!!" Snapped the teacher "Jay Chirp and Erick Brickers--" Elsa cut her off with laughter "Chirp? your name is Jay Chirp?" She burst in laughing, the rest of the kids had had it with the teacher's scolding that they no longer tought it as a laughing matter. Carla had had it too "SHUSH" she yelled as loudly as Elsa, or maybe even louder! "You shush" Elsa said, Carla went to the teacher's desk "Can you tell her to shush? Please" she begged, the tired teacher closed her eyes.
Just then, the bell rang for recess and Jay's class flew outside.
Jay just stood there, looking at Rosie as she headed off to the swings, Carla stood by Jay's side "come play with us!" She said, Jay got excited and ran off with her new friends to the monkey bars. Then, Elsa ran at Jay and Carla and Rosie. "I bet you can't stay hanging in the bars for a minute" she gasped. Jay got down from the monkey bar and looked at Elsa "ok, bet" she accepted the challenge and hopped on a bar, elsa counted "One... two.. three.. four..... five" She kept counting, even when Erick passed by and asked her to join him at the slide "seven.. eight.. nine.... ten, eleven.. twelve" Elsa pretended Erick wasn't there. Jay's hands started to get sweaty, and she began to slip "Sixteen.... seventeen, eighteen.. nineteen, twenty!" Elsa counted.
"ugh! Im falling!!" Jay tought, Carla and Rosie began to cheer "Go, Jay! You can do this!!" While Erick made more mocking bird noises, Jay would have fallen into Erick, but that wouldn't be okay, even if he did make fun of her. "Twenty nine... thirty! Thirty one.. thirty two..." Elsa got stuck, then she gasped again "thirty eight! Yes that is it!" Jay sighed, her left hand slipped from the bar "HELPPP!!!!!" Jay cried, Carla looked at Elsa. "Fourty three... fourty four ... fourty five" she counted so slowly, it wasn't fair to Jay, because Jay counted so fast. All of a sudden, there was a shriek on the other side of the playground, Jay turned to look, a girl named Evie had fallen off the slide, "HURRY!" Jay rushed Elsa, Elsa was not a girl to be hurried, she counted as if nothing else was happening "fifty.... fifty one.. fifty
two, fifty three....." she counted slower. Jay suddenly lost her grip and tumbled to the floor, scraping her knee. She glared at Elsa, who frowned. Carla and Rosie quickly came to Jay's aid. Evie had stopped shrieking, a teacher was helping her. Jay got up, then she looked at her reddened hands. "I knew you couldn't, Jay Chirp" Elsa ran off with Erick. Suddenly, everything that happened that day was too much for Jay, she burst into tears and ran off, she had Rosie and Carla on her heels. "LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" Jay yelled at her friends, who looked sad, they stopped running and stood in the middle of the playground, looking injured. Jay ran to a brick wall, behind a corner and sobbed, suddenly, she felt someone running at her, she turned to see who it was, it was her dog? "Daisy?" She whispered.
