The morning sun spilled golden light over the Coalseam hills. Dew sparkled on the grass, and wildflowers painted the earth in pinks, yellows, and purples.
Rooey, the kangaroo, stretched his long legs and sniffed the breeze. "Another perfect day in Coalseam," he said, bouncing to the top of a small rise.
Above him, a flash of pink and grey swooped through the air. "Race you to the waterhole!" called Sunny, the galah, her voice bright and teasing.
"You're on!" Rooey laughed, boucning after her. Dust puffed beneath his powerful legs as he leapt across the open plains. Sunny twirled and looped in the air, her wings flashing.
They reached the waterhole together, laughing. The bush was alive - kookaburras crackled, a mob of kangaroos grazed in the distance, and the gum trees whispered in the breeze.
But then came a sound that didn't belong...
...A deep rumble. A metallic growl.
Rooey's ears flicked up. "What's that?"
Sunny circled high above the trees. When she came back, her voice trembled. "Humans. Big machines. They're cutting down the forest!"
Rooey and Sunny crept closer. At the edge of the forest, giant yellow bulldozers were tearing through the trees. Men in bright vests shouted orders. A tall man in a shiny suit stood nearby, holding a microphone.
"That's Anthony," whispered Sunny. "He's a politician. I heard humans talking about him at the picnic grounds."
Anthony smiled for the cameras. "We're making room for progress!" he said loudly. "Coalseam will soon be the home of our new mining project. Jobs! Roads! Growth!"
Rooey frowned. "But what about the animals? The trees?"
Anthony didn't hear him, of course. He just pointed at the trees and said, "Start clearing more land!"
The machines roared back to life. Rooey's heart thudded. "We have to stop them."
Sunny fluttered anxiously. "But how? We're just a roo and a galah?"
Rooey looked around at the frightened animals scurrying away - possums, goannas, even a mother koala clutching her baby. "We can't give up," he said. "We'll think of something."
Sunny nodded. "Then I'll find help." She spread her wings. "There must be other animals who'll fight for their home!"
"Be careful," Rooey said softly.
With one last look back, Sunny soared into the sky and disappeared over the horizon.
The forest grew quieter each day. Trees fell. The air filled with smoke and dust. Rooey tried to warn the humans - standing in their way, thumping the ground, even knocking a few signs over - but they just chased him off.
At night, he sat by the shrinking waterhole and looked up at the stars. "Where are you, Sunny?" he wondered.
He missed her chatter, her jokes, her songs. The bush felt empty without her.
Then, one morning, when Rooey almost lost hope, a familiar squawk echoed across the valley.
"Rooey! Rooey!"
Sunny swooped down, feathers ruffled but eyes ablaze with excitement. "I did it! I found help!"
Behind her came a thunder of wings, feet, and paws. From every direction, animals poured into Coalseam - emus, wallabies, cockatoos, wombats, dingoes, even a few humans carrying signs that read "SAVE THE FOREST" and COALSEAM IS HOME!"
