Polar bears live in the Arctic, it is a very cold place covered with ice and snow. The Arctic is one of the coldest places on Earth.
Polar bears have changed to survive in this chilly environment. They spend a lot of their time on the sea ice. The ice helps them hunt and travel. Without the ice, the polar bears life would be much harder.
Polar bears have thick white fur that helps keep them warm from cold weather. Their fur also helps them blend into the snowy land.

This helps hide them from prey. Under their fur, they have black skin that absorbs sunlight to keep them warm.
Polar bears are great swimmers and can swim for many miles in icy water. They use their large paws to swim through the water.

Swimming is important because sometimes the ice breaks, and they need to go over to new areas. Polar bears can hold their breath underwater for almost two minutes.

Their big paws also helps them walk on thin ice without falling through. The paws spread out to act like snowshoes, giving them better balance. Their sharp claws dig into the ice to stop them from slipping.

Polar bears also use their paws to catch and hold onto slippery seals. Their paws are covered in fur to keep them warm.
Polar bears mostly eat seals, which live under the ice. They wait near holes in the ice where seals come up for air. when a seal appears, the polar bear uses its sharp claws and strong jaws to catch it.

Seals are full of fat, which gives polar bear energy that they need to survive. Sometimes, they also eat fish, birds, or plants if they can find them.

Polar bears have an amazing sense of smell which helps them find food. They can smell seals from a mile away, even under thick ice or snow.
This helps them know where to hunt without wasting energy. Their noses are very important for survival. They also use hearing and sight to find prey.

Baby polar bears are called cubs. They are born in cozy dens made of snow during the cold winter months.
They stay with their mothers for over two years to learn how to hunt and survive. The mother takes very good care of her cubs, teaching them how to swim and find food. Cubs are playful and curious but need to learn quickly to stay safe.

Polar bears usually live alone, except when mothers are raising their cubs.
Adult bears mark their area by scratching trees or leaving scent marks. When they meet other bears, they sometimes play or fight to show who is stronger. They try to avoid each other to save energy.

Adult bears are very big and strong. They can weigh up to 1,500 pounds, which is as heavy as a small car. When standing on their back legs, they can be as tall as a person.
Their size helps them stay warm and hunt large prey. Even though they are big, they can move quietly and quickly when hunting.
