I dedicate this book to my teacher for encouraging me to learn more about science and the world around me.

What Is the Deciduous Forest Biome?

The Deciduous Forest Biome is a temperate biome where trees lose their leaves every year. The word deciduous means “falling off.” These forests are known for their bright fall colors and four clear seasons.
Climate and Weather

The deciduous forest has a moderate climate with four seasons.
Winter is cold and sometimes snowy.
Spring is cool and rainy.
Summer is warm and can be humid.
Fall is cool, and leaves change color.
The biome gets about 30 to 60 inches of rain each year. Because of the changing seasons, plants and animals must adapt to survive.
Plant Life
In the fall, leaves change colors because the green chlorophyll breaks down. Trees drop their leaves to save water and energy during the winter. The soil in this biome is rich and full of nutrients. This helps many plants grow.

Location

Deciduous forests are found in:
Eastern United States
Parts of Canada
Europe
China and Japan
They grow in areas between tropical rainforests and very cold tundra regions.
Why Leaves Change Color
Leaves are green because of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps plants make food from sunlight.
In fall:
Chlorophyll breaks down.
Red, orange, and yellow pigments become visible.
Leaves fall to protect the tree during winter.

Mammals include:
White-tailed deer
Black bears
Foxes
Raccoons
Squirrels
They eat plants, nuts, insects, or smaller animals.

Common birds include:
Owls
Woodpeckers
Hawks
Cardinals
Some birds migrate during winter.
Birds

These animals include:
Frogs
Salamanders
Snakes
Turtles
They depend on moist soil and fallen leaves for protection.

Step into the amazing world of the Deciduous Forest Biome! In this book, you will explore a forest that changes with every season. From colorful fall leaves to snowy winter landscapes, this biome is full of life and scientific wonder.
Discover how trees survive freezing temperatures, why leaves change color, and how animals adapt by hibernating, migrating, or storing food. Learn about forest layers, food chains, decomposition, and how humans impact this important ecosystem.
The deciduous forest is more than just a place with trees. It is a balanced ecosystem where plants, animals, climate, and soil all work together. Turn the page and explore how life survives in a forest that never stays the same for long.
