Once upon a time, a little girl named Ariana wandered through a quiet forest, curious about the world around her. She stopped and looked around, wondering where life began and how everything in nature seemed to grow and move.

The sunlight streamed down between the tall trees, and a gentle breeze rustled the leaves. Birds chirped above her, and insects buzzed softly around flowers. Suddenly, Ariana noticed a small green plant swaying happily in the sunlight. She walked closer, kneeling to get a better look.

“But why are you reaching toward the sun?” Ariana asked the plant aloud, imagining that it could answer her. To her surprise, a soft, tiny voice replied, “I reach for the sunlight because it gives me energy. I use it to make my own food and grow strong. Without the sun, I wouldn’t survive.” Ariana blinked in astonishment. “You can speak ?” she asked. The plant chuckled. “Yes, I can. I will show you how life works. Watch carefully!”

Ariana watched as a small rabbit hopped into view, sniffing the plant and nibbling on its leaves. The plant explained, “When the rabbit eats me, the energy I stored from the sun moves into its body. That energy helps it hop, run, and stay alive.” Ariana gasped. “So the sun’s energy isn’t just for you? It goes to the rabbit too?” “Exactly,” the plant replied. “Energy moves through a chain of living things, which we call a food chain. Everything is connected.”

Energy moves through a chain of living things

Ariana looked around the forest in awe. She saw birds eating insects, insects eating plants, and even tiny microorganisms breaking down fallen leaves to give nutrients back to the soil. “So everything depends on each other?” she asked. “Yes,” said the plant. “This is how nature works. The sun gives energy to plants, plants feed animals, and animals feed other animals. Even when we die, we return energy to the soil to help new life grow.”

Even the mushrooms on the forest floor played their part, breaking down dead leaves and returning energy to the soil to help new plants grow.
