Where Do Bacteria Live?

Bacteria are tiny living things that are found almost everywhere!

In the soil (dirt), In water like lakes and oceans, In the air, On and inside plants, animals, and people, and Even in very hot or very cold places!

What Conditions Do Bacteria Like?

Different bacteria like different kinds of places: Some like it cold, Some like it warm, and Some like it very hot

Oxygen (air)

Some bacteria need air to live and Some do not need air at all

Water and Salt

Some live in freshwater and Some live in salty water

Parts of a Bacteria Cell

Cell membrane – A thin layer that holds the cell together

Cell wall – A strong outer layer that protects the bacteria

Cytoplasm – Jelly-like stuff inside the cell

DNA – The instructions that tell the bacteria how to live and grow

Size and Shape

Bacteria are very tiny—you need a microscope to see them

They can have different shapes: Round (like a ball ), Rod-shaped (like a stick ), and Spiral (like a twist )

How Big Are Bacteria?

Bacteria are extremely tiny—so small that you cannot see them without a microscope

Most bacteria are about 1 to 5 micrometers long
(That’s way smaller than a grain of sand!)

What Does That Mean?

You could fit thousands of bacteria on the tip of a pencil

A single human cell is much bigger than a bacteria cell

Bacteria have some cool parts and features that help them live and move: Cell wall - A tough outer layer that protects the bacteria... Cell membrane - Holds everything inside the cell... Pili - Hair-like parts that help bacteria stick to things...
