Back before Texas became a state, even before we were our own country, we were actually a part of Mexico. We wanted to be free from the standards of Mexico and how they treated us. They wanted us to eat, sleep, and change every part of us to be like the citizens of Mexico.
The people of Texas had enough! The Empresario Green DeWitt had requested a cannon from the Mexican government. Well, Texas was tired of the government demanding and controlling everything. So, when they could get the canon, the people of Texas were ready to fight for their freedom. So, they tied a flag to the cannon that said, "Come and take it." This was the first major fight of the Texas Revolution that led us to freedom. This was known as the Battle of Gonzales on October 2nd, 1835.
After the Battle of Gonzales, the people of Texas rallied to form Texas's first army and establish our first Naval forces to protect our coasts. Sam Houston was voted the Commanding General who led his troops to the Siege of Béxar. They were able to capture and force General Martin Perfecto de Cos to surrender, which led us to seize control of what is now San Antonio, TX, and the Alamo mission.

James (Jim) Bowie
William B Travis
Davy Crockett
Once they seized the Alamo, they stationed fewer than 200 soldiers to protect the mission from Mexico. Some of the most famous soldiers were James (Jim) Bowie, William B. Travis, and Davy Crockett. Mexico did launch an attack and killed and or captured most, but some were able to escape. After the attack, General Santa Anna ordered the massacre of the 342 Texan soldiers who were captured from previous battles and the Alamo. This was known as the Goliad Massacre on March 27, 1836. These fatal actions caused mass outrage and only grew the support of the rebellion.
