Texas Constitution 1876:
Bill of Rights

Hi! My name is Olivia.
Today in class, I learned about the Texas Constitution. It was written in 1876 to explain how the Texas government works and how it protects its people

Humbly invoking the blessing of Almighty God, the people of the State of Texas do ordain and establish this Constitution.

My teacher told us that the Constitution has a very important section called the Bill of Rights. This part lists the freedoms and protections that belong to every person in Texas. The government must follow these rules. Let's go explore and see why these rights were written to be protected!

Why was the Constitution written?

The delegates to the 1875 Constitutional Convention.
In 1876, Texans wanted to make sure the government did not become too powerful. They had learned from the past that people needed protection. So they wrote the Bill of Rights to protect individual freedom.
I saw a gathering of people sharing their ideas. Under the Texas Constitution of 1876, freedom of speech is protected. This allows people to express their thoughts and discuss important issues
Freedom of Speech

Another right is religious freedom. People can choose their own beliefs and practice their faith. The government cannot force people to follow a certain religion or stop them from practicing their beliefs.

The Bill of Rights also protects the freedom of the press. People can print newspapers and share information. This helps people learn about important events and understand what leaders are doing. In the background, you can see a printing press from the 1800s.

I saw people gathering together to share their ideas. The texas bill of rights protects the right to assemble. because of this, people can still come together peacfully to this day.

Right to Assemble

The Texas Constitution also protects property rights. People can earn land, homes, and personal belongings. The government cannot take someone's property without good reason and fair legal process.
