To my daughter, Clarissa,
who helps every day with a kind and caring heart.

My name is Claire. I am the oldest child which means I was born first. I have a little brother and a baby brother. Everyone says I'm the big helper in our family.

Sometimes, we have cereal for breakfast. I practice pouring my own cereal and milk in a bowl. When my little brother wants some cereal, I ask my mom if I can help him. She says, "Yes, just be careful".

After breakfast, my baby brother makes a mess playing with the toys. My dad asks me if I can help clean up and I say, "Yes, I can help!". I pick up the toys and put them away.

I tell my mom that I helped my baby brother clean up. She smiles and says, "You did a great job. Thank you for helping".

I pick out my clothes and get ready for school. When school is over, my mom and brothers pick me up. My mom holds my baby brother and my little brother always runs and gives me a hug. That makes me feel happy.

In the car, I tell my mom that I am hungry. When we get home, I take off my jacket and shoes. My mom asks me, "Can you help your brothers take off their jackets and shoes too?"

I tell her I'm hungry. She says if I help she can get the food ready and have the table set faster. So, I agreed to help.

After we eat, my mom cleans up and I help her take the dishes to the sink. I go wash my hands and I take my little brother with me. He loves playing with water.

"The Little Big Helper"
Throughout the day, Claire completes different tasks, but she also encounters moments when she needs help. Her parents step in to support her and she learns how good it feels to receive help in return. By the end of the night, she feels very tired. She reflects with her mom on her day and all the ways she helped. Her mom comforts her and reassures her. Claire ends her day going to sleep, feeling cared for and supported.
The message of this story is that helping family is important, but you don’t have to do everything alone. It feels good to care for others, but it is also important to be cared for. This story teaches children that it is okay to accept help, rely on others, and rest when they are tired. In a family, everyone takes turns helping one another, and this is what makes everyone feel safe, loved, and supported.
