Claire is the oldest child and always helps her family. She has two younger brothers and she often finds herself naturally helping her parents with them or being asked to help. The story takes place mainly at home over the course of one day. It follows Claire as she narrates her typical day as the oldest child who has many responsibilities.
Throughout the day, Claire completes different tasks, but she also encounters moments when she needs help. Her parents step in to support her and she learns how good it feels to receive help in return. By the end of the night, she feels very tired. She reflects with her mom on her day and all the ways she helped. Her mom comforts her and reassures her. Claire ends her day going to sleep, feeling cared for and supported.
The message of this story is that helping family is important, but you don’t have to do everything alone. It feels good to care for others, but it is also important to be cared for. This story teaches children that it is okay to accept help, rely on others, and rest when they are tired. In a family, everyone takes turns helping one another, and this is what makes everyone feel safe, loved, and supported.
