Hi there! My name is Selena. I guess I am an ordinary nine-year-old,
whatever that means. I listen to my parents, do my homework,
play with my friends, clean my room (maybe not all the time),
and I am usually very happy. Today was different though.
When I came home today, I was feeling very sad. I must
have looked sad too, because Mom had noticed.

"What's wrong, Selena?" Mom had asked.

So that's when I laid it out for her. My big problem. "Well, you see, today in school we had
Career Day." You know those days where adults come and talk to you about what they do?

"That sounds great!" Mom had said. "So, why are you so down?"

"Well, it made me think, and I don't know what I want to be when I grow up." I replied
glumly.

                                    "That's easy!" said Mom. "All you have to
                                     do is find what you love.
                                     When you do what you love,
                                     you'll never work a day in your life."

"If I do what I love, I'll never work a day in my life, huh?" I stopped to
think about what it was that I loved.

"Well," I had said after some thought, "I LOVE science! I should be
a scientist!"

"That's great!" replied Mom excitedly. "What kind of scientist would
you like to be?"

"There are different kinds of scientists?" I had asked. I thought
a scientist was just a scientist.

"Yes!" Said Mom. "There are a bunch of different kinds of scientists!"

"Well, how do I know which one to be?" I felt very overwhelmed
at this point.

"Well," Mom started. "If you love science and helping
people in need, a doctor is the scientist for you.
The kind of doctor that you and I go to when we get sick
is called a Physician. Their job is to study,
diagnose, and treat sick or hurt people. Then, they
give them medicine to help them get better. This type
of scientist focuses on the scientific field of biology,
or the science of life and living things."

I am a physician. I
help people get better
when they're sick or hurt!

"Maybe you like non-human animals. If you love animals
and science, maybe you will want to be a veterinarian.
Veterinarians do the same things as physicians do, but
for our pets. They can even help zoo animals, or other
animals all over the world! This type of scientist would
also focus on biology."

I am a veterinarian.
I help animals when
they are sick or hurt.

"Maybe you will discover that you have a passion for oceans,
fish, and other sea life. The oceans are so deep and vast
that we have explored very little of them. This is what a
marine biologist does! Marine biologists explore our oceans
and document the activity of fish and other living creatures.
Just like their name suggests, they also study biology."

I am a marine biologist.
I study organisms that
live in the water.

"Some people fall in love with the tiniest life form that
we know of on our planet. These scientists, called
microbiologists, study living things that are so small, you
need a microscope to see them. They study how these
living things act and interact with the rest of the world.
These scientists also study biology."
