Hi.   I’m Toby, a mischievous, naughty, but loving 

dog.   Now I know you’re probably thinking, “dogs 

can’t talk,” but believe it, we can talk, and we 

never stop.   I live with this great, loving family, 

the Scanlon’s.   I have three brother’s, Captain 

Nemo, Bubba, and Cletis the cat.   My momma is 

Jeanna.   She loves me so much, and I love her too!  

I also have my grandpa and grandma that live with 

us, along with two fish.   So that completes my 

family, and I love them.

When I was a puppy, my real brothers, sisters, and I 

lived with this man who didn’t take care of us that 

much, but one day, this very nice lady came and got me 

and one of my sisters (Holly).   She had this man with 

her; he was kind of chubby (hee hee).   I could tell right 

away they were good people.   Next thing you know, I 

was getting in a car, driving to this place, and “BAM,” I 

was inside and I had a little girl strapped around my 

neck.   That is how I met my momma.   My sister went 

with the lady and I went with the man.

This all took place during Christmas vacation, so I 

guess I was a Christmas miracle, because, well, I 

am amazing. 

My real name was Tank, but it was changed to Toby.   I 

don’t really mind it.   Maybe my new name was just a 

fresh start for me.   As I was growing up, during my 

puppy years, I had a new brother and sister named 

Mersadie and Bubba.   Those two were real siblings, but 

they welcomed me in just fine, even though I wasn’t.   I 

have had so many adventures; it’s just crazy.   For 

example, I always run off and my family is always mad 

about that.   However, I think of it as an adventure and 

a way to get into some trouble.

One day I noticed that Bubba was gone, and I 

wasn’t sure what was happening.   On Easter I 

got a new brother named Bubba.   As years went 

on, Mersadie left and then a new little brother 

of mine came along.   He was a short, stocky-

legged, and crazy dog named Captain Nemo -  

Nemo for short.  

My owners, like I said, are always mad at me 

when I run away.   Well, let me tell you a story 

about a time when I was trying to get out of 

the house and have an adventure:

  Well, it was around Halloween time, and there 

was a lot of pumpkins.   I was minding my own 

business, running down the road out of the 

yard, and of course, not paying attention to 

anything, when suddenly, small pumpkins 

started flying at me.

 I turned around to see grandpa, with pumpkins 

in his hand, throwing them right at me.   I 

couldn’t believe it - my grandpa - trying to hit 

me, little innocent me!   I was just going on an 

adventure!   I was going to come home at supper 

time!

Have I told you I like to climb on the kitchen 

table to see what is up there?    Unfortunately 

I always get caught, since I’m scared to jump 

off.   So, that was crazy.

Another adventure was…..well, you may not know, 

but my mom loves snowmobiling.   One day she was 

practicing for one of her races, and my grandpa 

and I were with her.   She was going down a 

straight stretch a few time’s, and then, during one 

of those times, I ran out, and “BOOM!”   Oh, it 

hurt - my leg that is - hurt real bad.   My mom was 

on the ground crying.   They took me to this 

building that had nice people there.   They helped 

me out and then put me into this thing they call a 

kennel.

My mom, and grandpa left; but next thing I 

knew, they were back, giving me my mom’s 

jacket.   I had to get what looked like to me, 

little, sharp, thin “thingies.”   They looked 

scary!   Yes, I’m kind of a “softy.”  

Well now, what should I tell next?

 “Oh, hey, a squirrel!”

 “No, no, no.   Back on track, Toby, back on 

track.”
