SPLAT! A squirrel was doused as a bus ran over a puddle. This particular bus was transporting Laura, Lizzie, Butter, and
all their classmates. Laura was an average older sister with her
younger sister Lizzie. They were on a field trip to the local zoo.
Their trusty dog Butter was a special guest on the trip. He
constantly whined impatiently for food. ‘’Not now.’’ said Laura,
ruffling his fur. ‘’Right now!’’ said Lizzie, tossing him a treat.
Butter happily munched his biscuit as Laura scolded Lizzie.
’’But he was hungry!’’ whined Lizzie in defense. Laura rolled
her eyes. Suddenly, the bus started to shake. It shuddered to
a stop in the middle of the road. All conversation died as the
bus driver opened the door to see what was the matter. A few
minutes later the driver was back. He announced that the bus
was out of fuel. Students were starting to whine and complain.
’’Everyone out the bus,’’ He said in his deep gruff voice.
The students crowded the exit as the driver called the school.
Laura dragged Lizzie and Butter out the door. All the kids were
walking about restlessly while Butter simply napped.

Suddenly something caught Lizzie’s eye. She poked her sister soshe could see. ‘’Look,’’ she said, pointing to a tree. There on a
branch perched, an owl as beautiful as can be. Laura gasped,
''That’s a barred owl! They’re rare birds that live in the forest.’’
The owl hooted and flew deeper in to a forest they had not
noticed before. ‘’We have to follow it,’’ said Lizzie, whipping out
her camera. And before Laura could say ‘’Oh no‘’ Lizzie had
dragged her and Butter in to the wilderness.
Half an hour later of trudging through the underbrush,
Butter was whining again, and this time, so was Laura. ‘’Lizzie,
that owl is gone, let’s go back to the bus!’’ Lizzie nodded absently
,her eyes on the skies. ‘’Sure, go back then,’’ she said pointing
backwards into a tree. Laura looked at it. This tree was just an
oak tree that was commonly found in forests. Butter made a
confused bark. Laura looked about the forest. There were
magnificent trees and stray stones; it was beautiful. She sighed
and walked after Lizzie, knowing they would only get even
more lost. Then, Lizzie who was still looking up, bumped into a

large rock. At least, she thought it was a rock... The rockgrowled and uncurled into a towering figure of a polar bear, at
least 10 ft tall. Its black eyes were full of anger, and it charged. Lizzie screamed and ran, Laura, Butter, and the polar bear
were right behind her. What the heck? Polar bears were not
native to forests like these. Laura could almost feel adrenaline
coursing through her body as she raced through the forest.
(Gee, she could’ve won the Olympic 100 meter dash at this rate)
She could feel and hear the bear behind them, running with
heavy footsteps that splintered branches and crushed rocks.
The polar bear startled the other animals that lived in the forest.
Squirrels, birds, raccoons and others ran and flew for their lives
as the polar bear trampled their forest homes. Laura turned
a corner and her heart seemed to drop like a stone. It was a dead
end. A massive hunk of rock blocked their path. It was so huge
that she knew it wouldn’t budge.
THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. The polar bear rounded the corner
and roared triumphantly. Laura and Lizzie clawed helplessly at
