It was a bright, sunny morning in eastern New
Jonesy. Grace saw the sunlight coming in her
window and heard birds singing outside.

Grace woke up, rubbed her eyes,
stretched her arms over her
head, and gave a big yawn.
She went to stand up out of her
bed and realized that her bed
seemed too high. She ran to the
door, only to realize that she
couldn’t reach the handle!

“Mom!” Grace cried. “I think I shrunk!”
Grace’s mother took one look at Grace, and started to
laugh.
“Oh, Grace, didn’t I tell you that if you didn’t eat your
green veggies you were going to shrink?” asked Grace’s
mom.
“What do I do?” Grace shouted.

“You have to walk 200 miles to find the
Grower on the West Coast. He grows all
the green veggies, and he can help you
grow back to normal.”
Two hundred miles was a long way for
Little Grace to go, but she didn’t want to
be this small forever!

So off she went. She left New
Jonesy and walked for a little
while before she realized she
had no way to know how far
she had walked. She stopped in
at the Mercury County
Measuring Store.
She said, “Excuse me, can
anyone tell me how far it is
from here to New Jonesy?”
The store owner smiled and
said,
“Yes, it’s 47 miles to Jonesy.”

Little Grace knew she still had a long way to go, but she
wanted to know exactly how long. She quickly pulled out
a pencil and notebook:

Little Grace walked and walked, and walked some
more. After a while, Grace entered a town called
Newberry. She saw a woman at a fruit stand and said,
“I’ve been walking for a long time. I last stopped in
Mercury County. How far are we from Mercury?”
The woman said, “Mercury? Oh, honey, Mercury is 92
miles away! I can’t believe you walked that far!”
