Coon Hunting with Ole Blue
This story is about a dog named Ole Blue.
Ole Blue turned out to be a grand champion
coon hound.
It took Ole Blue many nights out in the woods
learning how to be a coon hound.
Let's take a few moments to look back in time
and see what Ole Blue did to become one of the
best coon hounds around.

One day Ole Blue was out by the driveway
where he lived, and a young pup came
wandering up his way and stopped by and
visited with Ole Blue.
The little pup asked Ole Blue if he was the great
coon hound he had heard so much about.
Ole Blue told him yes he was, but he was
getting too old to coon hunt much anymore.

Ole Blue asked the pup what his name was?
The pup said my name is Duke.
Ole Blue said that Duke was a good name for a
pup.
Duke said to Ole Blue, I want to be a coon dog
just like you!
Ole Blue laughed and told little Duke that was
great, but it will take a lot of work to learn how
to tree a coon.

I want to be a coon hound

Little Duke thought for a moment and said I will
work real hard and do my best to be a good
coon hound just like you!
Will you tell me how you learned to coon hunt,
asked Duke?
Ole Blue saw that the pup really wanted to learn
so he sighed and told the pup...yes I will share
with you about how I learned and maybe that
will help you.
Duke yelped for joy and thanked Ole Blue!

It was starting to get late in the evening and
the sun was getting low in the sky but little
Duke was anticipating to hear all he could that
Ole Blue had to say.
Ole Blue began by pointing over to the little
house across the way and said that is where
this story will begin.
In that little house there lives a little old man
who is my master. He has always been very
good to me.

I went to live with him when I was just a small
pup just like you.
My master has always taken care of me. He
feeds and gives me clean water everyday. If I
get sick he takes care of me until I am well.
He gave me my own house to live in and when
it gets cold he places something inside my
house to keep me warm.
I love my master and he loves me.

We have been together for many years.
My master is the one who helped me learn how
to hunt coons.
Even as a little pup he would take me out in the
woods to teach me how to hunt.
He knew it would be a task, but he was patient
with me as I learned.
You see there are so many different animals

in the woods and they all smell different.
I did not realize when I was just starting to
learn that it was so many different animals!
There are not only coons...but there are
squirrels, opossums, rats, birds, cats, snakes,
and many more...all in the woods!
Ole Blue chuckled and said, I remember the
first thing I chased in the woods was a jack
rabbit!
When I found that jack rabbit and let out a

bark at it, it jumped straight up into the air and
landed on top of my head! It liked to scared
me to death!
I ran as fast as I could back to my master and
he was laying on the ground laughing so hard
he was out of breath!
He just picked me up and petted me on my
head and told me...old boy, you will learn one
day, but until you do we will just continue
having fun trying!

I remember another time we went into the
woods I smelled a different scent and began
following its trail, but it did not take me very
long after I caught up with it to run back to my
master!
Little Duke asked why? What was it?
Once again Ole Duke chuckled and said, it was
a pole cat!
A pole cat asked Duke?

Yes a pole cat, but some people around here
call them skunks. And let me tell you they
stink!
You learn real fast not to trail them and you
never forget!
It took my master giving me six baths before I
could stand to smell myself! Pew-wee said Ole
Blue...don't chase no skunk!
Oh I won't said Duke! Thanks for telling me!

Ole Blue went on and continued telling Duke
about so many hunting trips he and his master
went on.
They enjoyed everyone they went on.
Ole Blue told Duke about a opossum that he
trailed one night. He thought for sure it was a
coon because the opossum climbed up into a
tree.
It took awhile to learn the different smells
