There once was a grasshopper named
Gilbert. Gilbert loved to listen to stories at
home and at school. But he only ever read one
book by himself.

At school all the other students would talk
about what great books they were reading. But,
Gilbert kept on reading the same book even
though he knew all the words by heart. He was
so bored of reading the same book!

I read the best book this weekend about butterflies!

Good morning class!

There is no way I can read that!
Gilbert had a big secret. He did not think he
was a very good reader so every time he saw a
book he was too afraid to try it. He would open
it up and see all the words on the page and put
it back. He just knew he wouldn't be able to
read it!

Gilbert's friends would always
give him books that they had read and
loved. The cover of the books looked so
exciting! But Gilbert would just tell
them that he already had a book that he
was in the middle of, even though he
had read that book twelve times!

We just read this book. It was so scary! You love scary books Gilbert!

I know you will find another book to love!
One day Mrs. Chirp, Gilbert's
third grade teacher, pulled Gilbert
aside. She told him that he was such a
great reader and now it was time for
him to try reading new books. She told
him that she had a challenge for him
to try three different books during the
week.

Thanks, but this book is too hard!

Gilbert decided to give his teacher's
reading challenge a try. On Monday after
school Gilbert went to the park. There was
a chameleon there reading the book The Mixed
Up Chameleon by Eric Carle.
Gilbert thought that sounded like a
funny book. He looked at the book and he saw
that it had a lot of pictures. It looked good
to him. Then he started reading and saw a
word he didn't know right away so he gave
it back to the chameleon.

On Wednesday, he went to his cousin
Giselle's house and asked if she had any good
books to read. She told him that she had just
finished a great adventure chapter book. She
said it was so good that she finished it in two
days because she never wanted to stop reading
it!
Gilbert decided that sounded like a good
book so he opened it up but saw that it had no
pictures! There was no way he could read a
book without pictures!
