The Missions
In the 18th century, Spanish priests established five Catholic communities along the San Antonio River. These communities are none other than Mission Espada, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San José, Mission Concepción, and the Alamo. The missions were much more than religious institutions. In hopes to convert the indigenous population around the area, their other purpose was to create a self-sufficient population that could continue their existence and grow as loyal Spanish subjects.
The missions have been the subject of historical and archeological research and study for decades. The reason, San Antonio is an area rich in Spanish Colonial history. Just recently, the missions were named a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

A school was opened in 1915, and was in use for 52 years.
