Amy was born with a four pound three ounce body and an
adventurous soul. When Amy was a mere six years old, she
decided to explore the wild terrain of Wyoming. While there,
she happened upon a large nest, filled with eggs that were
taller than she was! When Amy climbed inside the nest to
investigate, the mother of the eggs, a huge emu, returned.
The Emu Mother mistook Amy for one of her own children,
and with a happy squawk, set about raising Amy as one of
her own. Amy did not like this arrangement. “Please! I’m
not an emu, I’m a little girl! I must be free!” she cried. But
the Mother Emu refused to listen. Amy was forced to endure
all sorts of emu activities for several days. Then, one night,
while the Mother Emu was sleeping, Amy hopped out of her
feathery prison and ran away as fast as her little legs could
carry her.

Amy was able to grow up live a normal life. She took pleasure
in wearing skinny jeans and purchasing rainbow colored flip
flops. She joined FFA. She laughed often and took joy in
jumping off of cliffs and watching films like “The Nightmare
Before Christmas”. But she couldn’t quite shake the feeling
that she was being followed. There were times that she looked
out of the corner of her eye and could have sworn she saw a
streak of feathers, long beak, or amber colored eyes. But she
didn’t let this stand in her way. She swallowed her fears, went
to college and became qualified to teach at an elementary
school.

The first day of school dawned, cold and white, because it was
in fact snowing. Amy hated snow, but faced it happily and with
a smile on her face. She was going to open the minds of
children and fill them with beautiful, wonderful things. Nothing
could dampen the excitement she felt.
Nothing…except, perhaps, an Emu.

As Amy pulled into her parking spot at the school, she felt a
sudden sense of unease. Why? She didn’t know. Her stomach
churned. Her heart raced. What was going on? Shakily, Amy
got out of her car and started walking towards the school.
Then she froze. Standing there in front of the doors to the
cafeteria was an emu. But not just any emu. The same Mother
Emu who had held Amy captive all those years before. A small
scream escaped Amy’s lips. The Mother Emu had come to take
her child back to the nest. Amy turned and ran for her car. But
halfway there she stopped. She couldn’t do this. She couldn’t
keep running. There were little children in a classroom beyond
those doors that needed her. Was she going to let her life be
ruled by a giant bird? “No.” She said aloud. “No!” She knew
what she was going to do.
