Mary was a young woman who lived in the
small town of Nazareth in Judea. She was
very poor and she was betrothed to a
carpenter named Joseph who also lived in
Nazareth. At this time Judea was ruled by a
man named Herod the great. In all of the
words that could be used to describe him,
great, is not one of them. He was a cruel
ruler. He even killed his wives and children!

aOne day an angel of the Lord came to Mary.
He told her that she was going have a baby by
the power of God. Mary was shocked and
scared. She was young and she was poor. Why
did God chose her to carry his one and only
son? After the angel left Mary went home and
told Joseph and her parents what had
happened. They didn't believe her and they
were afraid that she would get stoned because
that was the custom for woman who got
pregnant before marriage. Joseph was very
sad because he knew that to keep his honor he
must divorce Mary.

dream

That very same night God sent Joseph a dream saying that
Mary was telling the truth and that he should still marry her
and keep the child she was carrying and care for it as his
own.
It also came to be that at this time the Roman Emperor had
required a census. The Roman military had come and taken
over Judea, and the Jews did not like being "occupied" by
these foreigners. The census meant that all men had to take
their families and go to the place that their ancestors were
from to be registered. That meant that Joseph and Mary had
to travel all the way to Bethlehem which was where Joseph
was from. At this time Mary was already very pregnant.

So Mary and Joseph started to travel to
Bethlehem. It was cold and hard but finally
they made it. But when they got there it was
so crowded and to make matters worse, Mary
was about to have her baby! Mary and Joseph
searched and searched but in the end all that
they could find was a dark, cold cave where
animals lived.

So there in a cave Jesus was born. The king of everything was born in
a cave with animals.
Meanwhile there were some shepherds out in the field watching over
their sheep in the night. All of a sudden there was an angel before
them. The shepherds were terrified. But then the angel said, "Do not
be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ
the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in
cloths and lying in a manger" (Luke 2:10-12). So right away the
shepherds went and found Jesus and worshiped him. And after they
went out, they told lots of people what they saw. It should be noted
that shepherds were the lowest part of society. And the fact that the
angel appeared to shepherds just goes to show that everything about
Jesus's birth was very humble. Even Jesus called himself "the Good
Shepherd".
