As Skye took Cocoa over the jump course in front of the barn, she smiled. Cocoa was doing well, maybe well enough to enter a competition later in the year. Cocoa easily cleared the first jump, the second jump, and even the water jump. Skye's grin stretched wider than the sky itself, for Cocoa had once struggled to clear the glittering jump.
Skye guided Cocoa to the final jump, a new knock-down wall she had been preparing Cocoa for over the months. Cocoa approached it easily after a beautiful landing from the water jump. However, as Skye steered Cocoa towards the wall she felt the Hanoverian misstep and stumble. The wall loomed ahead, and Skye tried frantically to right Cocoa. Cocoa recovered, but her strides remained choppy. Desperately, Skye attempted to steer Cocoa away from the jump, but the mare refused to turn away. Instead, she took the jump. Skye watched in horror as she pitched over Cocoa's head, and Cocoa fell over the jump.
Skye, relatively unhurt, scrambled to her feet. April came jogging over to inspect Cocoa. Soon they found that the area around her fetlock was swollen and bent at an unnatural angle. "Oh Cocoa!" April exclaimed. Skye began to cry, but she pulled out her phone and dialed the vet's number. The line was busy.
"Call Brenda," Josh suggested. He had appeared from inside the barn after witnessing the accident. "She works with animals, I think. Maybe she knows a different vet."
Skye dialed Brenda's number, and after a brief exchange learned that Brenda was a vet. Brenda promised to come over as fast as possible. She treated Cocoa's leg as best she could while Josh got out the horse trailer.
"This is bad," remarked Brenda, "We'll have to take her to the animal hospital where I work."
Brenda didn't want to risk removing Cocoa's tack until they reached the safety of the animal hospital, so Skye sat in the trailer with Cocoa for the whole ride. Cocoa, although clearly injured, was still affectionate and gentle. When the trailer came to a halt outside the hospital, Brenda carefully opened the trailer and led Cocoa down the ramp and towards the hospital where she would stay.
Brenda, and two of the other vets working at the hospital carefully untacked Cocoa and put on a halter. They gave her a red and white hospital blanket like the other horses there had. Cocoa stood calm and quiet, although clearly favoring her leg. April, Josh, and Skye spent another hour with her before they reluctantly headed back to Mariposa ranch, where the other horses would be waiting.
