Have you ever wondered how you get sick? Have you ever wondered what a germ is? Did you ever think about how your body fights off germs? Are you interested in your body and how it works? Well, if you want to know about it, just turn the page!

Chapter 1

The Immune System
Helps our body fight of diseases and sicknesses.

Just wait, Rose. Soon you will understand.

I don't understand very well, Miss Brown.

Two hours later....

Wait Rose, don't leave yet. I want to show you something

Okay. But I hope it won't take too long.

This machine will help you understand the immune system. Your surroundings in the machine will be virtual. It will look like you are inside the human body.
Wow! I can actually experience being inside the human body!

Yep!
2 minutes later, Rose and Miss Brown got inside the machine.
Yuck!!!! What is all this green stuff and those purple balls?
The green stuff is mucus, and the purple stuff is a pathogen, another word for a germ. Right now , it looks like we are in a nose.
Oh. I did not know that.
Well, the mucus traps the germ, and it is blown out of your nose when you blow your nose.

I used my phone to change the surroundings. from inside the nose to inside the bloodstream.
How did we get into the bloodstream?
Those fuzzy white things are the macrophages, a type of white blood cell that eats viruses and bacteria.
What are those fuzzy white things?

That yellow stuff is the stomach acid. It melts germs. However, some germs can withstand the acid bath.

What's that yellow stuff?

What happens if they do survive the acid bath?
You'll see.

The intestines drown the germs in stomach juices!
Do the germs know that there is stomach juices in the intestines?

No.

Understand The System
Even when you are not sick, you have mucus in your nose. The slimy mucus is always trapping pathogens(germs). That is why you should blow your nose instead of sniffing it back in.
Macrophages are a type of white blood cell. They eat the pathogens and then they digest them. The waste particles of the germs are expelled from the body.
The stomach acid found in the stomach is used to digest the food you eat. But it is also used for melting
germs that try to invade the human body. The stomach gives these germs a terrible acid bath. However, some germs can survive the acid bath. But just because they do survive does not mean that the battle with the germs and the body is over. After the stomach comes the intestines, which hold the stomach juices that also kill the virus.
The germs are not expecting to find stomach juices in the intestines.
