Once upon a time, there were two young boys who lived in Afghanistan. Their names were Amir and Hassan. Let's learn more about their story!

Amir and his Baba, a very rich and well-known man throughout the city are friends with Hassan and his father, Ali. This is a surprise because Hassan and Ali work as their servants.

Amir and Hassan are best friends. They always play make believe games together. Hassan always makes Amir tell him stories, because he can't read or write.

One day, Amir and Hassan take part in the kite running competition as they do every year. They always made a great team, but they never won before.

Finally, Amir and Hassan win the kite runner competition! Unfortunately, while Hassan was on his way to catch the last kite, something very, very bad happens to him.
Amir notices Hassan has been gone for a very long time and decides to go check on him. When Amir finds Hassan, he witnesses something terrible but does nothing to stop it.
Amir feels terrible for not standing up for Hassan and stopping the bad guys who were hurting his friend. He is too scared to talk to Hassan about what happened, so it is never talked about again.

...
...
Amir and Hassan stop speaking to each other because of what happened. Eventually, Hassan and Ali move away.

A couple years later, Amir and Baba move to America because of all the bad things that were happening in Kabul. The city was not safe to live in anymore.
At first, Amir and Baba have a hard time living in America. Baba was no longer rich and finds a job working in a gas station. Meanwhile, Amir attends high school and later graduates with hopes of attending college to become a writer.
To earn extra money, Amir and Baba go to the flea market every weekend and sell knick knacks they find at garage sales. At the flea market, there is a small section where all of the Afghans sell their goods. Amir meets an Afghan woman there named Soraya.

Amir really likes Soraya. They start talking at the flea market more and more each visit. Soraya is very interested in Amir's writing and begins to like him as well.
