This poetry anthology is dedicated to my dog, Luna. Thank you for always waking me up in the morning in the most slobbery of ways. Thank you for being my best friend and protector all in one, even if that means barking at the front door when no one is there. You're the coolest. Love you bubs.

I am a lover of chocolate
I wonder if I will see the world come to an end
I hear my fan ticking as I write this poem
I see my dog sound asleep on my bedroom floor
I want to eat healthier, but then I go back to the first line
I am a child of God
I pretend I can eat my own body weight
I feel successful when I accomplish my goals
I worry that my friends don’t see their value
I cry for the dogs in shelters without a loving home
I am remorseful towards those who have been bullied to the point of suicide
I understand what it means to live my life to the fullest
I say “dude”, “bro”, and “dope” more than I should
I dream to provide my future family with the life my parents have given me
I try to stand up for those who deserve more than what they have received
I hope no one has ever felt threatened by me
I am my own person
I Am Poem: I Am My Own Person
I Am My Own Person
Response:
While writing I Am My Own Person, I tried to dig deep into my personality. My likes and dislikes, lies I tell myself, and my beliefs. This poem shows my personal and somewhat sensitive side. I believe it shows how unique my personality is. I wrote this poem when I was feeling happy and confident.
Bio Poem
REsponse:
When I wrote this poem, I was stuffed on Wings n' Things. I had come home and watched Beauty and the Beast with my best friend, Ashley. I wasn't lying when I said I am absolutely terrified of sharks, clowns, and being kidnapped. When it comes to Bruno Mars, I know every song like the back of my hand. My mom's family came on a boat from Portugal to the US; it has always been a dream of mine to go back and visit.
Bio Poem
Sarah
Adventurous, affectionate, cheerful, confident
Daughter of Mark and Stacy
Lover of big dogs, wings n’ things, and laughter
Who feels overjoyed by her own success, dislike towards tomatoes, and obligated to sing during Disney movies
Who needs constant attention, endless hours on the beach, and her hydro flask
Who gives her full dedication to cheer, hugs to everyone, fist bumps to her teammates
Who fears getting attacked by a shark, clowns, and being kidnapped
Who would love to see Bruno Mars in concert, Portugal, and the Northern Lights.

Re-creation Poem:
From the War on Water
- The distance had been grieving
- The thought of it made her queasy
- In the gray December
- Fog hanging in the neighborhood
- Hands as ice
- She approaches the door
- Porch light burning yellow in the dark
- Face bright, by the fire
- There he sits, arms ope wide
- The father she’d been missing from the war on water
- The light in her eyes beamed throughout the room
- Both with peeled cheshire smiles
Highlighted words are from Gary Soto’s poem “Oranges”.
From the War on Water
Response:
This poem is about the time my dad came home from deployment. Him being gone for so long made me sick to my stomach. I missed him so much. I came home from a cheer practice one night in mid December and my dad was sitting in our family room waiting for me. I can remember how much joy I felt in that moment. He had been gone for a year and a half and I had no idea he was coming home that day.
At Ten at Night
Resonse:
Writing this poem was hard for me because it hit a touchy subject. When I was younger someone broke into my house. The yelping for attention was my dog barking at my parents door to wake up. I went downstairs to see what was wrong and a tall man was standing there digging through my house. I tried to scream for my dad but I was in shock so nothing came out of my mouth. They caught the man eventually and our insurance covered everything except for the memory.
- At ten at night
- Parents already sound asleep
- The house silent
- At ten at night
- The insomnia kicked in
- At ten at night
- Stuck in my own thoughts
- At ten at night
- Glued to a bright screen
- At ten at night
Imitation Poem: At ten at night
Sudden yelping for attention
At ten at night
I run downstairs to tend to her
At ten at night
The entire house is awake
At ten at night
Staring into my eyes
At ten at night
He sees my fear, as if I had seen a ghost
At ten at night
Silently screaming for my dad
At ten at night
Letting the fright roll from my tongue to the hairs on my arm
At ten at night
He runs out with our stereo and his tail between his legs like a dog
At ten at night.

Definition Poem: I Can't Help It
Inevitable: [in-ev-i-tuh-buh-l], adjective, inevitability, inevitableness,
Unable to be avoided, evaded, or escaped; certain; necessary:
The way only the underneath of my hair curls;
Being late to school every Monday morning
And the consequences that follow;
My heart melting every time I see a puppy;
Passing my ex everyday in the hall;
Being tired in the morning
Because I pulled all-nighter the night before doing homework;
The way a heart beat bumps after running;
The way I drool like a baby when I get a good night sleep;
The way I jump for joy when the waiter brings my food
Like a kid in a candy store;
It’s inevitable.
I Can't Help It
Response:
The word 'inevitable' is probably my favorite word. It describes life, death, and the world around us. The first time I noticed it was in a book I read in 7th grade, "The Fault in Our Stars" by John Green. Augustus Waters was answering how being forgotten scares him. Hazel Grace agressivley strikes back saying that in the end, no one will be around to remember even the most important of our species. That is inevitable.
Response:
I wrote this poem shortly after begging my mom for a newer car. Don't get me wrong, I am entirely grateful for the car I have now. My mom completely laughed in my face and told me I clearly need sleep if I think I'm getting a new car. My mom told me when I can afford a roof over my head and I am financially stable to buy myself a new car, then I can buy myself one.
Dream On
Limerick Poem:
Dream On
Uselessly wishing upon a star
I asked my mother for a car
She said go to bed
And dream on instead
Knowing that day was too far
