Pentagon Papers: 7000 page document revealed among the other things that the government had drawn up plans for entering the war even as Johnson promised that he would not send American troops to Vietnam
Vietnam
The US didn't wants South Vietnam to fall to communism to they ended up joining the war.
Robert McNamara was the Secretary of Defense who pushed America to join the Vietnam war.
The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave Johnson the power to use American military strength to protect America whatever means necessary.

In order to get out of the draft they would mutilate themselves in order to not pass the physical.
The Vietnam War was different then different wars because the US was fighting to keep the democratic government in southern Vietnam. Other wars were created to fight over territory.
The Tet Offensive showed the fighting and deaths that were happening over in Vietnam which ended up weakening the public support of the war.

1968
Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated on Apirl 4, 1968. He was shot in Memphis, Tennessee at the Lorraine Motel.
Bobby Kennedy was campaigning for his presidency when he was shot and killed on June 6,1968.

The Tet Offensive lasted from June 30, 1968 - September 23, 1968. North Vietnamese and communist Viet Cong forces launched a coordinated attack against a number of targets in South Vietnam.
Walter Cronkite was a trusted news anchor. When he started talking about the Tet Offensive, people started to listen to him.

Sex, Drugs, and Rock'n'Roll
A hippie is a person of unconventional appearance associated with a subculture involving a rejection of conventional values and the taking of hallucinogenic drugs attempting to diminish adults.
Sexual Freedom: The feminist movement started to arise during this era. The use of birth control gave women the freedom to choose whether or not they engaged in sexual intercourse.

Drugs: The use of drugs became big during this era. Bands such as the Grateful Dead used drugs and did it publicly. The Grateful Dead used LSD which was not yet illegal in the US. Several other participated in the use of drugs to go adults social norms and go against adults.
Music: Music became a big influence on the people during the 60's. Several festivals went on during this time. The first one was Woodstock. It ended in a success. On the other hand, another festival called Altamont which resulted in fighting and death.

Peace With Honor
Nixon's strategy on Vietnam was to expand, equip, and train South Vietnamese forces and assign them to a combat role.
On May 4, 1970 Four students were killed and nine were injured at Kent State when an Ohio National Guard opened fire during a protest.
The evidence of the massacre was covered up by Calley. They ended up only charging 14 men for the killings.

The US left Vietnam on March 29, 1973.
When the soldiers came back they were called baby killers and they were treated very badly.
About 2 million people died and were wounded in Vietnam.
At the end of the war, the US spent about $168 billion.
