Why did the US get involved in Vietnam? We didn't want another country to fall to Communism.
Who was Robert McNamara? The Secretary of Defense during Vietnam, he was very against the spread of Communism.
What did the Gulf of Tonkin resolution do? Gave him the ability to send troops into Vietnam without asking congress first.
Who was able to dodge the draft? Why was this unfair? People in higher education or people that could pay to dodge it. Mostly rich, white people could dodge the draft which meant mostly poor and minorities were drafted, that made it unequal since the ratios were uneven.
How was the fighting in Vietnam different? It was a lot more guerrilla and involved more citizens then most wars before it, it also in a few ways more violent.
How did the Tet Offensive change public perception of the war? It shocked the Americans who thought they were winning. It was one of the main reasons why Johnson didn't run in 1968.

Martin Luther was assassinated on April 4, 1968 by James Earl Ray, who was then arrested. This sparked a large amount of violence across the United States, but not here in Indiana since we had Bobby Kennedy here to chill everyone out.
Speaking of Robert Kennedy, he was assassinated on June 5, 1968. Only 3 months after he convinced Indiana to not react with violence he was shot by Sirhan Sirhan.

The Tet Offensive took place on January 30, 1968 when the communists surprisingly attacked the South Vietnamese and the Americans. This shocked the American people who then began to distrust the American Government. Walter Cronkite who was a very influential news reporter publicly was against American influence in Vietnam which helped sway people against the cause.

What was Nixon's strategy on Vietnam? Mostly he wanted to stop the communist advancement and eventually move out and let the South Vietnamese take charge.
What happened at Kent State? The national guardsmen opened fire on some students who were protesting the war, 4 died and 9 were injured.
Why was the trial surrounding the My Lai massacre so significant? The soldiers were not forced to face as harsh a punishment as people expected.
When did American troops leave Vietnam? We left in March 29 2973.
How many soldiers died? How were they treated when they came back? How much did it cost? 58,220 American Soldiers. They were treated horribly when they came home, people did not respect them. It is estimated that the war cost us about 168 Billion.

What are hippies? People that look different and normally have radical, unconventional views. Hippies often partook in recreational drugs, were against wars, such as Vietnam, and often had long hair. They had a major influence on American history since their invention.
