When you look at a necklace, you don’t expect it to be evil. You don’t think that when you dog find's a necklace that you’ll go on a mystical adventure. That is exactly what I didn’t think would happen. I thought that my life would be perfectly normal, or as normal as a life can get. However, if everything is normal, then why do we always fight for freedom? Why do we always invent new things? Why do we always do the wrong thing, for a good cause? That is exactly what- “JAMES! You’re late for school! Wake up!” I was laying in my bed when I heard my mom screaming in my ear. I guess I was just dreaming the whole thing.
I tried to go back to sleep but, my mother took a giant piece of ice, probably from the freezer, and put on my back. I scrambled out of bed to get it off. “Mom, come on, do I have to go to school?” I pleaded a few seconds after I got out of bed. My mom is a nice woman. She was pretty, loving, and she always knew what was best for me. My father is also like that. The only problem, when she gets annoyed, she gets mad. “No James, you don’t need to go to school. You can just stay home, and never get a job, and we will run out of medicine, and die of infection!” my mother shot an angry look at me while she said that. I love my mother, but I hate it when she guilt trips me!
“So, what will it be? School, or your parents dying?” she asked, “school.” I said reluctantly. I got up, and got dressed for school.I was eating my breakfast, toast, eggs, and pancakes when I heard my two dogs whining at the back door. I walked to them, and opened the door. They shot out like a missile out of a rocket launcher. I watched as they ran around the yard over and over and over, it was making me dizzy! When they finally tired out, they walked around the yard, and did their business. Something was different this day though. as the dogs stopped, daisy, the younger pup, started digging in the dirt.
I yelled at her to stop, but she just kept digging, so I walked over and pulled her away. When I looked what she was digging at, it was a box in the ground. I wrapped my fingers around it, and tried to pull it out, but it wouldn’t budge! I walked to the door, and yelled at my mom, “hey ma! I found a box out here! It looks pretty old! Its stuck in the dirt though!” she replied with, “grab a shovel in the back! maybe it has goodies in it!” so I grabbed a shovel, and started digging. It didn’t take long to finally pull the box out. When I shook the box, the contents inside felt pretty heavy. The box itself was no more bigger than one of those crates you can buy at target.
When I looked for a opening, I found a padlock on the front of it. I tried opening it, and It wouldn’t budge. The lock had to have dirt in it, so I couldnt lock pick it. I still had a hour before I had to get to school, so I looked around for something to break the lock with. I found a hatchet near the garden shed, and I picked it up. It took a few whack’s but, I was able to break the lock off. When I opened the box, it had a pocket watch, a old gun with bullets, a old multi tool, and a strange necklace. I picked up the gun and felt it in my hands, it was preserved in the box for, what looked like, tens of hundreds of years! It even still had bullets to shoot with, like, half of the box was filled with bullets!
When I took the multi tool out, it was in pristine condition, and all of the tools worked too. The strange thing is, it had tools that a normal multi tool wouldn’t have. It had a little blow torch, something that looked like a shocker, and many other things that I did not want to find the use of. When I took the pocket watch out, it had many dials on it, and instead of time, it had a sun and a moon, with a needle slowly working its way from the left side of the sun to the right side. When I turned one of the dial back, the needle when backwards towards the left side of the sun again. “hey james!” mom called out to me.
“yeah?” I replied, “I think the clocks broken, because you actually have five more hours before you have to go to school! Sorry hunny!” mom yelled through the door. That’s strange, how could I mistake having one hour till school, for five hours? I turned the dial to the right, and the needle turned to the right. “JAMES!” mom screamed, “I WAS WRONG! WE HAVE TWENTY MINUTES! HURRY IT UP!” she screamed once again. I put the pocket watch inside the box, and closed it. i had to lock it somehow, so I took a locker padlock, and put it on the box.
I had to show these things to my friends at school, so I put the box inside my backpack and took it to school, not realizing that the gun and multitool was still inside the box. When I got to school, it was a normal school day. I was in high school, and in the school I was in, we were allowed to have tiny breaks in between classes. I sat down with my friends, and told them about the cool stuff I found. They were amazed. “aww man, that’s awesome dude! You could sell that stuff for thousands of dollars!” my friend zack told me, “yeah, if he hadn’t of touched it, that must have ruined something about it!” my other friend Shannon said.
They were arguing whether it was all valuable, when I told them, “I actually brought it all!” and they all looked at me stunned. I thought they would be awed, but they looked scared. “DUDE! You can’t take that stuff to school!” zack told me. The smile on my face slowly turned into fear. I had taken the old gun ,and the multi tool to school! They were going to tell me something else, when I felt a giant hand grab my book bag from behind, and yanked me in the air. When I looked who it was, it was Brock Johnson, the meanest athlete in the school. “So, the nerd has expensive stuff?” Brock asked. In response, I kicked him in the groin to make him drop me, and ran.
If I had stayed a little longer, I would have not only been grounded into dust, but they would find out I had all the old stuff in my bag! I ran as fast as I could to the field, and started towards a giant wall of bushes. The wall of bushes had been there for a while, and my friends and I made a tiny hideout there for us to hide whenever we were being chased. I ran into the bushes, and opened a tiny door on a fence behind the bushes. I crawled in, and locked the door behind me. I could hear Brock pounding on the fence, looking for me. Since I was here, I might as well look at my stuff a little longer. I took out the box, and pulled out the one thing that I did not look at, the necklace.
The necklaces chain was made out of solid gold, and it had obsidian in the middle of it. I thought, ‘hey! This is perfect! If I give this to my crush, she’ll definitely be amazed!’ and laughed this off as silly. I felt the necklace in my hands, and then started to put it on. I wrapped the gold around my neck, and looked at the obsidian. I could see my reflection in the black glass. Suddenly, everything around me started to shake. At first, I thought Brock had found my hideout. I scrambled over to one side of the little room, box in hand, pushed a piece of cardboard out of the way, and crawled into what I called the safe room.
It was a giant tunnel leading to an old train tunnel, a broke down train was blocking both sides of the tunnel so no trains could actually hit anybody. I blocked the entrance with a piece of cardboard, and crawled over to the entrance to the train station. The entrance to the train station had a manhole cover next to it, so we could blocked our way in, but when I looked in the hole, I saw nothing. I literally, saw blackness. I could not apprehend what I was seeing. Suddenly, I felt something hit the back of my head, and I was out cold. I woke up in the middle of the hideout, with a figure trying to start a fire in the corner.
I looked around for something to use as a weapon, and saw the box. I scrambled over and unlocked the padlock, and pulled out the gun from the box, I noticed it was actually an old revolver, and loaded few bullets in it, and pointed it towards the figure, who just noticed me. We had you a stare down, even though I could barely see them in the darkness. I needed to say something, so I said, “wh...wh...wha...who...who are you?” I was finally able to get out. The figure just stared at me, or at least that’s what I thought they were doing. They, reached up to their head, and pulled at something. It seemed that they had a hood, and they pulled it down.
I still could not see their face, so they slowly walked over to me. I motioned them to stop when they were just a few feet away. I could see now, that it was a girl, looked about my age, and they were in a black hoodie and jeans. I lowered the gun, hoping I could trust her. “Who are you?” I asked once again. The girl replied, “its me, Shannon, remember me?” I didn’t believe her one bit, she looked nothing like Shannon! Shannon was years younger then me, and this girl looked my age! “If you are Shannon, then, who was your high school crush?” I asked. Everybody knew, because she always told everybody, that her high school crush was this middle schooler named john.
However, when she replied, “you were.” I knew that she was not Shannon. “Yeah right, you had a crush on that middle schooler named john! You told everybody!” I told her, raising my gun once again. “Alright...alright...so I lied but, if I wasn’t Shannon, they how do I know that you used to have a crush on this girl named Jennifer?” she replied, slowly putting her hands up. It did not make any since! Jennifer was a pop star idol and I only told her that! In addition, that was back in 4th grade! It had to be her, so I lowered my gun once again.
“How...are you older? I thought that you were three years younger than me! Has it been three years since I came out from here?” I started frantically blurting things out. She raised her hands to try to calm me down, “James.you've been missing for three years. And.you don’t look a day older since the day you went missing!” she replied, “Well.guess that means that.we’re the same age?” I asked embarrassingly. She blushed and looked away. “That does not matter” she said and looked at me once again, “have you really been surviving here for the entire time? How?” she asked hoping to get an answer that I did not have.
