This book is dedicated to Dr. Medows for all the hard work she has done to help us become better future teachers.

When you give a teacher a science classroom,
she will create
a learning environment
where students develop
their own claims
on what they analyze.

If you give a teacher a science classroom,
she will want to communicate to her students that science is fun!

If the students know science is fun,
they will want to know that they will be actively engaged in many different scientific areas which encourage careers in their future.

If students know what they are learning impacts their future,
students will be invested in the teacher’s effort to develop their unique scientific habit of mind.
Then the teacher will emphasize distinguished meaningful science instruction from meaningless activities by engaging students in a variety of science practices.

Inquiry
Open-ended questions
Observation
Hands-on experiences
Process over product
Through the variety of meaningful science practices,
students will begin to engage and make sense of the natural world around each young mind.

When you give a teacher a science classroom,
she will create a learning environment where students are ready and excited to learn. They will be excited because the teacher will assess their prior knowledge through KWL charts to see what their prior knowledge and build lessons around it.

When the teacher is given a science classroom,
The teacher will decide how to deliver content to her students. The way content is delivered is key to ensure student attention while developing the scientific language and practices.

The teacher’s role is to deliver content as a facilitator,
the teacher will help student connect the dots between objectives and content.

If the teacher helps students connect the dots of their learning,
she will have to model for students. She can show students that struggling through complex thinking is okay.

If the students know that their teacher wants to incorporate their interests,
they will pose creative, inquisitive questions that they genuinely want to seek out the answers.

If the classroom is student-driven,
engagement with content will increase.
