Dedicated to all the chickens at
Small Potatoes Farm.

This is the story of a friendly feathered flock of Sister Chicks.

Each Sister Chick has her own special skills. Together, they solve all sorts of problems that crop up on their little farm.

One day, Mystique the Dominque roamed about in the pasture, silent as a whisper, hunting bugs. Because she was soooo quiet, she heard everything.
On this summery day, Mystique heard trouble.

"I'm gonna jump out of this smelly nest!" cried Baby Bluebird from a crook in the pasture's crabapple tree.

"No they haven't."

"Yes they have. See!" Then Baby Bluebird wobbled onto the nest's edge.
"Yes they have."
Baby Bluebird's brother gasped, "Not yet! Your feathers haven't grown enough to fly!"
Mystique knew she needed to get help. She whisked away, back to the coop to tell Princess Rosalina.

!

Princess Rosalina always had a plan and, boy, was she ever good at telling others what to do.
"We've got a Code Silver!" Princess Rosalina squawked.
Then she screeched,
"Stormborn Song! Sound the alarm!"

Stormborn Song was excellent at one thing... being loud! When she sounded off, every farmyard in the countryside heard her.

Alarm Sounder
Stormborn Song blared like a siren, "CODE SILVER! Bawk-bawk! CODE SILVER! Buh-GAWK! Silver Bullet, you're up! Crabapple tree! Crabapple tree! Buh-GAAAWWWK!"

It's a good thing Stormborn Song was so loud because Silver Bullet was at the far end of the cornfield pecking at grasshoppers when she heard the alarm sounding in the distance.

Silver Bullet narrowed her eyes and raced like a ribbon of lightning to the crabapple tree in the middle of the pasture.

!

Baby Bluebird, still wobbling on the edge of the nest, bragged to his brother, "See. Watch my feathers work."
He teetered and tottered and TOPPLED down!

"AHHHH! My wings! I can't fly! Who's dumb idea was this?"
He fell
down,
down,
down...

"Gotcha!"
she cheered.
But Silver Bullet was there to catch him
FLUMP
into her soft, fluffy wings.

Baby Bluebird was crying and afraid now.

Whaaaaah!!!

"Oh dear," said Silver Bullet, "you need to see Sunshine Ray. She knows how to make anyone feel better."
She tucked whimpering Baby Bluebird on her back between her wings then zoomed like a flash back to the coop.

They found Sunshine Ray sunning herself cozied atop some haybales.
"There, there little one. You're safe now," Sunshine Ray cooed.
When she saw Baby Bluebird, frightened and teary, she folded him under her golden wing. Her shimmering feathers held him like a warm blanket.

This worked fine … for a little while. Then Baby Bluebird began to whimper.
"I can't stay with you forever. I'm not a chicken! How will I ever get back to my nest?"

Sunshine Ray fluffed herself to reassure him.
"I think we will need Phyllis to help with this problem."

She was right about that. Phyllis had major connections. She was very good friends with Nice-Lady-Who-Brings-Treats.

"Rawk... You did what?" she asked when Sunshine Ray had Baby Bluebird tell what happened. "Of all the crazy ideas..."

Phyllis had a raspy voice and was missing one eye, but she was tough and brave.

Sunshine Ray said softly to Phyllis, "Let's help this little guy solve his problem."

Phyllis blinked her one eye and looked at baby bird more tenderly. "Yes. Yes. Let's go find Nice-Lady-Who-Brings-Treats. She'll get you back to your nest in no time.
Rawk-duck duck."

Phyllis took Baby Bluebird by the little wing and together they marched right up to the big house, her white puffball hairdo bouncing all the way.
