To my science teacher for teaching me all about the ecosystems.

LOCATION
The Savanna ecosystem can be found across the globe near the equator.

The Savanna ecosystem is mostly found in Africa, but also in South America, Asia, and Australia.
Most of the plant and animal diversity is in the African Savanna.
ABIOTIC & BIOTIC
The Savanna’s ecosystem has abiotic components and biotic organisms.
Abiotic are non-living components like climate, soil, precipitation, and landscape. These are what biotic organisms depend on.
Biotic are living organisms like plants and animals. Biotic organisms are producers, consumers and decomposers.
LANDSCAPE
The landscape in the Savanna is grassland, with prairies, hills, rocks, cliffs, some trees and low-lying areas.
There are rock mountains called Inselbergs.

CLIMATE & WEATHER
Savannas are located in tropical climates but you don’t see lots of trees and tall vegetation, only grass, few shrubs and trees.
The weather in the Savanna is warm and humid most of the year.
Temperatures go between 60-100 F. It gets hot!
SEASONS
SUMMER - WET
WINTER - DRY
Savanna Biome's Project
The Savannas have seasons, but they are not the traditional 4 seasons we know.
They only have 2 seasons, wet and dry.
Animals and plants must adapt to survive without water for many months in the dry season.
WINTER - DRY & COLDER
Winter is very dry, it does not rain for months and most of the plants dry out.
It only rains about 4 inches of water.
Temperatures in the day are between 70-80 F, and at night between 52-62 F.

PLANT ADAPTATIONS
I'm a baobab!
Some plants have long roots to reach deep water, others have trunks that store lots of water.
Grasses also have adaptations to avoid being eaten and die. Some taste bitter, others are sharp, and many regrow after being munched on.
ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS
Most of the animals have adaptations, like long legs and wings for long migrations looking for water and food. Others have underground homes to stay cool.
Animals pant to lose their body heat, like dogs, and they don’t sweat. Others release heat through their body like elephant ears.
SUMMER- WET & HOT
The Summer is the wet season and it is called the Monsoon. It begins in May and lasts 6 months, raining 16-25 inches.
Vegetation grows lush and the animals and insects can live happily.
The summer nights are also hot and humid, the temperatures do not vary much during day and night.
PLANTS

There are grasslands, shrubs, and trees in the Savanna.

Animals can be herbivores, omnivores, or carnivores.
Plants are the main primary producers.
Herbivore animals are the main primary consumers. Carnivores can be secondary, tertiary, or quaternary consumers.
