Mel boarded the bus for the first time as a
freshman in high school. Mel didn't want to sit in
the front of bus and be tagged as a loser, the back
seats were out of the question, but if she sat in
the middle someone would sit with her. Mel would
be looking forward to the first day of high school,
expect for one major detail; everyone hated her.
Everyone hated her because she called the cops on
an end of the summer party where people were
doing bad things.

The day had gone by as expected, no one talked to
her. Most people just made mean faces at her. Her
ex-best friend Rachel, whispered in Mel's ears, "I
hate you." This hurts Mel's feelings a lot. At lunch
she sat by herself and to make things worse she
saw IT. When she saw IT, she shivered in fear. IT
changed her life for the worst. Mel ran out of the
lunchroom to hide.

Mel made one friend, Heather, the new girl.
Heather forces Mel to be more socially active and
involved. Heather makes goals for herself and Mel
to join a few clubs and to make more friends.
Meanwhile school, is not going well. Mel is failing all
of her classes, if she attends them. To get away,
Mel found an unused janitors closet to hide in
during school. The only class Mel enjoys attending
is art with Mr. Freeman. Mr. Freeman assigned
each student a random object that they would
focus on for the rest of the year. Mel was
assigned a tree.

Home life for Mel is also not well. Her parents are
fighting all the time and Mel doesn't even talk to
them. Or anyone for that matter. Mel spends her
days laying in bed, too afraid and tired for the
outside world. The guidance counselor is getting on
Mel's case, Mel has to start attending her classes
and bringing her grades up to at least passing
levels. The only class she is passing is art. Although
Mel can't seem to get her tree just right, it looks
dead. Mr. Freeman knows she can do better.

The night of the party, is one Mel does not want to
remember. Mel and her ex-best friend, Rachel,
arrived at the party, excited but nervous for their
first high school party. People started drinking and
dancing. Then she met IT; Andy comes over and starts
talking to Mel. Mel can't believe it, a senior talking to
her! Andy started moving fast and took Mel into the
woods. Andy whispered, "Do you want to?" In Mel's
head, her voice is as clear as a bell: "NO I DON'T
WANT TO!" But she couldn't spit it out.

Bye!
Heather has moved on to a new group of friends,
without Mel. Heather claims that Mel is lifeless
and boring and Mel knows it's true, but doesn't
plan on changing that. Back in art class, Mel still
can't get her tree right. The rest of the class
stares at her as she creates dry trees with no life.
Its not like she was going to talk to them anyway.
