Early navigation acts established taxes on goods
Smuggling was common since the British didn't enforce the acts before 1763

1754 1763
In 1753 occurred the French and Indian war also known as the "Seven-years war". It was a clash between the English over colonial territory and wealth.
It began when France's expansion into the Ohio River valley brought conflict with the claims of the British colony.

1763
This marked the end of the seven years war.
The Proclamation of 1763 was a plot to keep the colonists east of the mountain so they could stay under the control of England.
The colonists rebelled against this law!

A tax was passed by the British to pay for the war. This was known as the Sugar Act, which was created to prevent the smuggling of sugar and molasses.

1765
The British needed another way to raise revenue for their dept so they created the Stamp act. This was an imposed tax on all paper documents in the colonies.

1765
A Quartering Act then came along which required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks
The colonial authorities had to provide food, drinks, quarters, fuel, and transportation to the soldiers as well.

1765
Soon came a declaration of rights and grievances that claimed American colonists were equal to all other British Citizens.
This was called the Stamp Act Congress which was the first unified meeting of the colonies to respond to British policies.

Colonists began to boycott British goods and organized attacks on the custom houses and homes of tax collectors. This was known as the Repeal of the Stamp Act.
Declaratory Act was soon passed by the Parliaments after the repeal so they could reaffirm the authority and pass and colonial legislation it saw fit.
1766

The Revenue Acts, also known as the Townshend Acts caused the British to tax goods that were imported to the American Colonies such as glass, lead, papers, etc.
The British government had strong beliefs that colonists should help pay costs for protecting them.
1767

The Townshend Acts were soon repealed in order to keep the non-importation movement from widening.
This tea tax was to remind the colonies of British authority.
