About Us: (Marliza & Yandel in the Photo)

This is a picture of my partner and I, who are both POC (People Of Color), and have had our fair sure of experience dealing with Racial Stereotypes in some way or another may it be direct or indirect. We hope to educate everyone on our topic for the better of our community!
Our Topic: Racial Sterertyping

The topic my partner and I chose to explore was stereotyping. This photo was taken near buildings outside on a neighborhood street.
We chose these picture because they convey the idea that society labels people with negative tropes that are inaccurate. The pictures display some common prejudices based on people’s features and cultural backgrounds, that are used to bring down minorities and uplift whites.

Why is Racial Stereotyping an important issue?
This topic is important because stereotyping can affect a person’s way of life, as it puts the person into a box, where they’re expected to act or look one specific way. Stereotypes can be widely used that the person could start to subconsciously think the stereotype is true and start to comply with society’s thoughts about them.
This causes minority groups to lose their individuality and always be on edge in order to try and avoid feeding into society norms. This can rob minority groups of many opportunities and keep them in poverty.
What does this say about your life / neighborhood?

This image tells us that there are many stereotypes that apply to people of color like us. The stereotypes affect us, as they make us feel like we will act in negative ways. A unique part of where I live is that there are so many people of color in my community, and the stereotypes that are placed upon them can affect their futures. As you can see in this photo, the stereotype towards people of South Asian descent is that they have a bleak future, while whites would do not. The picture also displays other common Indian-American stereotypes.
